The storyline with Val and the fireman scares me

I really can't watch those episodes without being angry and scared-the idea of being "trapped" by someone like Val was, no matter what she did to get rid of him, scares the living *beep* out of me-It wasn't funny to me, it was creepy and scary-can something like that actually happen? (can you be FORCED to stay married to someone)

Well, I thought it was kinda sweet, how much he loved her.
Real life, no that probably wouldn't happen.
Would have to involve lawyers, I think... that wouldn't make a fun show.

No in real life if she really wanted him to leave all she'd have to do is call the police and have them haul him out.

reply

Well, yeah, police to have him escorted from the loft, but I was referring to divorce stuff.

She did call the police but he was friends with them so they didn't throw him out.

I think that very issue is the reason they did the plot with Charlie (Jason Priestly), which served two purposes:
1) It showed the audience that Vic could be much, much creepier, so we were glad he wasn't THAT bad.
2) It showed Vic how creepy he was being, so he backed off & became much less creepy.

Very true CaptHayfever. Very true.

I'm pretty sure that to get an annulment (which is much more preferable than a divorce) you usually need the consent of both parties unless it's on the grounds of fraud or similar.

Wow I'm seriously surprised that everyone finds Vic so creepy.
I thought he was super sweet & you could tell he just adored Val. Maybe it's because I think Dan Cortese is super hot. LOL IDK
But dang- I kept screaming for Val to stop "being confused" and go for it already! They were married, he was totally hot, a fireman (woohoo) & he was head over heels in love with her. I would've made that marriage official pronto!

I didn't watch the show when it originally aired. I'm watching the reruns on TNick so I don't know if they end up staying together or not but I'm rooting for a long & happy marriage for Vic & Val.

Anyway- I found him the opposite of creepy. On the other hand, Jason Priestly's character, Charlie, really gave me the willies! I've known guys like that, in fact I've been pursued/stalked by more than one in my lifetime. It is not flattering or romantic!

BTW- You cannot be forced to stay in a marriage, at least not in this country. The spouse can contest an annulment or divorce, which makes it a little more difficult to obtain & might take a little more time to be finalized. An annulment unlike a divorce, makes it as if the marriage never happened. They're fairly quick & easy especially if the marriage wasn't "consummated." I'm not sure how much difficulty is added if a spouse contests it though.
But in the United States you can't be forced to stay in a marriage you don't want to be in.

I agree. I didn't find Vic that creepy. I can certainly understand how someone might but to me he came off as a sweet guy who was completely in love.

I think that the situation with Charlie was a lot different to Val and Vic. The main reason being that Val and Vic had a romantic history. It wasn't some random guy who started professing his love for her after one date.

I think that maybe Vic should have backed off a little but as a poster above said, that was the whole reason for Charlie.

In the end his persistence paid off. Val ended up happier than she had ever been. Although as much as I love Val/Vic, I'm still disappointed that Jeff only lasted 1 season.

An annulment has to be agreed upon. Otherwise, you have to get a divorce. If fought, the judge can order marriage counseling though. Plus, I don't know about all states, but once you are married everything is marital property. If the police were called on him, the police could ask him to leave. However, if he posed no threat to her or anyone else they wouldn't force him to leave. That has to go through the courts as well. Like I said, it depends on the state.

I never thought of him as anything but sweet. I was never creeped out by him. He was sweet and just didn't give up easily.

Not in all states. Here in Arizona, you can obtain what is called a Default Decree of Annulment (if for example, the Respondent does not provide his/her answer/response to the initial Petition within the allotted timeline after being properly served with the documents). Otherwise, if both parties do agree and the Respondent has provided their answer to the Petition (and after they have settled any other remaining issues), they then sign a Consent Decree of Annulment with the Judge. I haven't checked to see if any other states allow this as well.

I didn't find the Vic storyline creepy either. I agree you could tell he really adored her. And this could just be me, but another reason I didn't find it creepy was because I could pick up on the fact that she wanted him too (the first episode I ever saw was the season 4 premiere), but was in total denial.
