How does a brilliant film like this get so unrecognized?

I have never heard of this movie before. I went to my friend's place and he recommended watching it. I looked it up at rottentomatoes to find 1 review, and that's it. I was really not that excited to watch it.

Wow, I was completely blown away! This is a brilliant film on every level!

I'm wondering, how does a movie this good get so unrecognized? How did it not get into big film festivals or atleast become an indie hit well reviewed by critics?

It is rare to find a film this good with this little recognition.
