What happened to Kevin McKidd?
His character seemed to just vanish some time after being in the Italian port?

shareBalian being the lone survivor takes me out of the film's realism and applies the Deus ex machina element a bit too far imho.
I was okay with Hospitalier (Thewlis) being a bit mystic and supernatural later in the film, but Balian exhibiting these death defying moments one after the other (this includes his half-hazard win over the Arabian swordsman in the desert) felt forced and unnecessary. It would have worked better if there were other survivors and even McKidd's character not dying but not journeying along with Balian but meeting him later in Jerusalem instead.
