I plan to watch this and I'd like to know if it is true to the facts.

It follows the book by James St James pretty closely.

I've seen both the feature and documentary and I can say that the story itself is not that interesting. It also seems that this guy is deliberately vilified and what was a stupid half-accidental killing resulting from some pecuniary tension was turned into a sensational event.

It's basically true to the facts as seen through the eyes of author James St. James. He was not there for the murder, but this was primarily reconstructed through Freeze's confession and Alig's bragging to his "friends".
