Macaulay Culkin's acting.

What did everyone think of Culkin's acting in Party Monster?

reply

Perfect since he visited Alig to get the part right and I hear that's how Alig pretty much was. Even if it was false that I he visited him it wasn't unbearable or anything, just kinda different.

reply

In the letter Michael Alig wrote me from prison himself, he said he has never seen the movie.

I just read online that James told Michael that Mac's acting was much closer to Richie Rich than Michael. But what I noticed, which I think is more important, is that he and Seth Green both got the campy, bitchy, whiney tone perfectly. I've been around queens such as these and the remarkable thing about them is their artifice. Head to toe presentation instead of being real. I was in another city but still part of the "club scene" during the same time period and what strikes me is that these people were into the scene for MUCH longer than most people. Not surprising then that they went downhill into tragedy.

i though he sounded like he was in a high school play or somthing

but i loved party mosters<3

reply

I thought it was like a high school play, too. Interesting story, though, which is far better presented in the documentary than this rather amateurish movie.

reply

It is tough to wrap my head around Mac's choices for this role. And his voice is so strange that it distracts from the movie. The real star of this film is Seth Green playing James St. James. He is spot on. Another major misfire was casting Dylan McDermott as Peter Gatien [rather than a more sinister individual - like a James Woods-type].

reply

his acting made me want to throw up on myself and wish for Party Monster to never exist.

reply

I thought his acting was pretty weak. Seth was much better. Macaulay was very wooden(no pun intended).

reply

His acting was horrible. He reminded me of a little child in a school play.

reply

i dont think this was a good role for him at all. seth green did it perfectly, but they should have gotten someone else for macaulay's role. he just didnt do it for me.

~so long and goodnight.~

reply

Macaulays acting is usually ok but in this i thought it was awful he doesnt do gay/drag/club kid well seth on the other hand i thought was actually believable as an actual person.

reply

i loved it. he was just like michael. haha. i dont know why people say it was bad acting... hello, theyre flamboyant club kids!! haha.

reply

I thought Culkin was excellent in the part of Michael Alig. I have seen people rave about Seth Green, but his performance was nowhere near as good. He didn't convince me at all as a great big flaming queen.

reply

I thought both actors were pretty weak, but Culkin was horrible. It felt like I was watching a high school drama production. I don't like Culkin as an actor, but he could have done better. The only reason people were convinced he was a big flaming queen is because of the costumes and makeup. He didn't have a queen attitude. He felt like he was just reading his lines.

Its not easy being a kitty kat.

reply

Seth Green was brilliant. He played the role perfectly, acting and sounding exactly like your typical queen. Mac's performance was horrid...he was just imitating every gay stereotype without actually being able to pull it off. What I love about Seth is his uncanny ability to blend into the films he does and naturally appear to be the character, whether it's a silly comedy like Without a Paddle, a flaming club kid, or a serious role.

I thought Macaulay's acting was great in this movie. I don't see why you all think it sucked.

His acting was stilted, more about making goofy faces and pursing his lips than giving a good performance - I felt like I was watching a high school production and a poor one at that, The movie was disjointed, with no flow. We didn't really get an opportunity to understand these people-they were all unlikeable-honestly would you hang around with something like Michael? You turn around and he's stealing your stash. Ultimately, he was a selfish looser, user, abuser, addict. I was on the outskirts of that scene in the 80's NYC and you don't get a sense of the utter darkness, the worm hole these people got sucked into. The movie was more interested in the glamour-the drug scenes didn't show the bleakness, people stumbling around, strung out on,"K" barely able to function, let alone talk-combine that with a heroin addiction= a lethal combination. It might have been glamorous for a brief time in the beginning but ultimately it was just a group of strung out lost souls. The fact that so many kids look up to this guy is sick and depressing-he still makes jokes about what he did. He killed, dismembered a man then ran around the city bragging about it-whats to look up to?

Honestly, I could stand it, because I couldn't wait for the next time I saw gitsie... (HOT!), but overall I loved that Culkin was in the movie, I don't think he did the best acting job. He was probably f*ed up half the time. By the end of the movie, I realised they couldn't have made it with anyone else. -Mal

reply

I do wish they had made it with someone else.
i have never heard an actor be so dry and monotone, even during the supposed..emotional "real" moments.
Lets just face it, we all know culkin read his lines from bob's cue cards during the ENTIRE movie.
I was mad i rented this one.

Thank your for this thread! I'm watching this now on the Encore Drama channel and I thought his acting is HORRID! I just started watching the flick about 5 minutes ago. His gay accent is too fake. It sounds like he's rushing his lines, the breaks in his sentences move too quickly. I'm basically saying the way he says his lines make the script appear to have no commas or periods. And he kind of suffers from the little Edward Furlong bitchy, wimpy voice. But the movie itself appears to be pretty good from what I'm seeing so far. I wanted to see this movie once I saw the true story behind it on CourTV or some program like that. I don't mean to be harsh on Culkin's acting, but I just call it like I see it.

reply

I thought his acting sucked! he was too stiff and it was almost like he was reading most of the words! You would think he'd be able to atleast play a druggie gay or not. and seth green was the best one in whole film!! (I remember Angel from my so-called life. he was good too.)I think seth actually carried Cullken alot through the film. He just had no feeling to his words or tone.

reply

I find it so funny I thought this role was so perfect for him and maybe they should have gotten someone else to play Seth's role. After reading everyone's opinions I have to agree Seth did act like a real queen. BUT they arent supposed to be acting like drag queens. I am a former club kid myself. I know what the people are like and how they dress and act. They both hit the nail on the head but that's wardrobe and writing. I thought it was supposed to be exaggerated. I thought it was cinematic. It's still one of my favorite movies and I still wouldnt want either roles played by anyone else.

reply

I'm a mac fan but I didn't like him at all in party monster, his acting was really bad!
seth green was awesome!!! just like the real james.

UNLESS you have happened to have been around *THE* Michael Alig, you really don't have the right to criticize Mac's acting in Party Monster, because he's playing a historical figure, in the sense that he actually existed. Until I meet Michael Alig, I will say this:

I watched it all.

I wasn't stoned.

So... I enjoyed it. Pip Pip. Carry on.

reply

i thought he was mesmerizing, seth green was brilliant as well, i dont know why you guys hate on culkin so much but i find that he fits the character perfectly.

reply

According to the letter *THE* Michael Alig wrote to me in response to Mac's acting - HE disliked it, too.

I would think that *THE* Michael Alig has the final say on how much Mac acted like him.

I like how ONE HOUR BEFORE YOU WROTE THIS you said Michael wrote you a letter saying he never saw the film. Did you get another letter an hour later or do you just like being a lying dipsh!t online for nothing?

From the letter that Michael wrote me. Yeah, he wrote me one, and I'll lose sleep over whether or not you believe that. I'd scan it, as proof, but I'd have to care enough.

"yes, i do get a million letters from people who have seen the movie...all wanting to know what i think of it...when the truth is, i still haven't seen party monster. i have seen photos of the different stars playing us...ive read the script...but havent seen the movie. from what i have seen, mac overacted a bit...im not that flamboyant...and i don't have a british accent...mac seems more like my friend richie rich, from what ive seen. the clothes and makeup and party scenes seem pretty accurate, though...and in the end i think thats all anyone i know...really cares about!

Take from that what you will. I am many things, but a liar isn't one of them. Now piss off, moron.

reply

I'm not reading your BS.

You clearly said two very different things; that he didn't watch the movie and that he didn't like Mac's acting. He can't do both, now either you're a fcking liar (bet) or you're an idiot who wrote something wrong which makes you calling me a moron for pointing out your fallacy HILARIOUS.

Now get to scanning that letter right next to the envelope it came in. Liar.

I try not to feed the trolls, but it's a slow night, so why not.

As you can see, he's the one who says he hasn't seen the movie, but he has obviously seen enough to comment on the acting, hence the comparison of Mac to his friend Richie Rich, rather than him.

Keep on keepin' on.

I enjoyed Seth Green's performance more than Culkin. Culkin sounded a little too rehearsed, it didn't sound natural coming from him. After watching it a few times you kind of get used to it but it's still a little shaky, i think he could've done better. But i was really surprised by Seth Green's performance because if i had never known who he was then I would think he was an entirely different person just based on the movie.
