where these guys seen as cool?

I never would of want to be in a club that had freaks like this.Where they going to the most popular clubs or was it just specific clubs that had these types of people going

reply

I think they were going to the most popular clubs of the time (Limelight, Tunnel, etc.). I would love to party with these freaks! Minus the drugs of course.

Having watched actual footage of the real-life club kids, I think they were a rather boring crowd - save for maybe James St. James - made to seem interesting because of their elaborate costumes and whatnot. I suspect that was one of the reasons why did they consumed as many drugs as they did - it was the only way they could find each other appealing or even tolerable.

I know people now who wish they were around during those days and doing the club kid scene when it was in its heyday.

Some folks dig it, just like some idealize what they think the 70's & 60's were like and wish they could be transported back in time to those eras.

the nyc club scene used to be a genuine mix of all walks of life, it wasn't so segregated like it is now. the hippest clubs in the city right now require celebrity status, a giant chanel bag and a high limit credit card to finance the bottles and models.

I imagine it would be fun for a night, but to hang out with these guys all the time- ugh, no way. They are so selfish and immature and superficial- they are like a cautionary tale for teens- you can't party ALL the time cos this is how you will turn out!!

reply

Actually it was people like this that helped make the NYC clubs during the 80's. A club that was just chock full of yuppies flaunting cash was not the place to see and be seen. Too drab, too boring, too normal for a decade that was defined by excess in everything.

reply

As opposed to clubs now? Where everyone has to be dressed up and walks around with snooty attitudes? Back in the day was much more fun in clubs. Now it's a general snoozefest where everyone takes themselves way too seriously and clubs act like they're the second coming.

reply

If I was born then I would have loved to be a club kid, I wouldn't go as far as some of the stupid outfits that they wear on this but I think it would have been fun!

The Club Kids thing in NYC was a very flash in the pan phenomenon that was overly hyped because people like Jenny Jones or Donahue would hype them up. If it hadn't been for talk shows, no one would've cared about or even knew they existed. I knew someone who knew some of those people and she said that the entire scene was really creepy.

reply

No, obviously it was hyped by Jenny Jones and Donahue after it had peaked. That's how modern pop culture works. It's cool until the hoi polloi discovers it and then it jumps the shark. You have to be there early in the scene before the wannabes discover it.
