hope it gets better...

I'm kind of disappointed, I just watched the first episode and part of the second, and it's obviously done from a secular viewpoint, how hard is it to research Christianity in this country? (although that would probably be the ultimate horror to Hollywood types!) They keep referring to "the end of the world" and "something dark coming." If they're Christian (and wouldn't someone who had just left the priesthood have some vestiges of Christianity left?) then they would say "The Second Coming," not the "end of the world," and the Second Coming is a GOOD thing, not something scary and "dark." Doing the show from a Christian viewpoint wouldn't make it less scary to most people, because they still have reason to be afraid if they're unsaved. I know non-Christians who run from the room in fear when someone starts reading a Bible aloud. Doing it from the viewpoints of former and present priests, it shouldn't be so secular. Priests should know there is no "end of the world." There is a Second Coming, and it's something about which we should all rejoice. (well, OK, not ALL!)
Maybe later episodes will offer an explanation, although I don't know what it will be since those who are saved have nothing to fear, the Bible is clear on that. Being in God's Holy Presence is the ultimate reward, and darkness can't touch you if you walk in the light.
Sure there's going to be an epic battle, but I read the Book and I peeked at the ending, and God wins.
Sorry, I want to enjoy it, but every time they say something out of character it pulls me right out of it.
The little boy who got weaker every time he healed someone, a priest (or anyone who's read a Bible) should know that God doesn't work that way. Jesus paid the costs for us, and God has enough power to go around, you don't have to bargain or pay for any gift He gives you. It's human nature to want to bargain, but it's unnecessary. God's power is limitless. We have to accept that we can't go dutch, we can't pay our own way, we have to accept God's grace and salvation.
What did they say when they made this series, "Let's do something edgy and religious but let's not go to church or read the Bible or anything." That's the problem with a lot of people today, they want to make their own path to God. "Well, God, I'm going to commune with nature and feng shui my living room and let's consider that my way of worshipping You" when God left very clear instructions on worshipping Him, and he doesn't like improvisations (as the two Levite priests who were struck dead for burning incense the wrong way found out.)
Christianity is hard work. you have to work at it. Worship and prayer and Bible reading and pursuing wisdom, it's hard work. It's worth it, and it leaves you with nothing to fear. I guess they have to do this from a secular viewpoint, since having nothing to fear wouldn't sell well as a supernatural/horror series.
Sorry this was so long, I was looking forward to seeing this series, and I feel let down. There are so few series worth watching.
If it does get better I'll post a *short* apology!

Haven't read your whole post right yet--in a bit of a rush, sorry!!--but the show IS NOT about the Catholic church. It's about the paranormal. ^_~ You have to hang around a little longer to find out what it's REALLY about.

Yes, I'm getting that now. I have no problem with that, I loved X Files and Angel, which is what this seems to be a cross between, but I was expecting something far different because of the title and the fact that they're supposedly former priests.
There would be a wealth of material for a show called "Miracles" with former priests as protaganists, based on end times signs and miracles but this is just a couple of guys going "I know how to rid of that kind of demon, he hates chocolate cake" or whatever. It's OK, I just wanted more depth. Plus I'm only at the end of the second disc, so maybe it will get deeper.
I guess I was just hoping for more religion, I've just read a couple of books about Revelations and I bought a huge book by a former Vatican priest who, as an aside, if he's telling the truth, happens to mention the Third Secret of Fatima in his book, so a well written, well researched series about that would be so yummy.
This show is pretty good, it's just a different genre than I expected. But they do NOT talk or act like people who believe in the Bible, except for Paul occasionally crossing himself!

I believe Richard Hatem wanted the show to start out in the realm of religion and then have it sort of move from being a show about the Catholic church (such as that one show he mentions in the commentary... "Nothing Sacred" i think it's called). He didn't want to get into that too deeply. But I would have to say the show is more about the paranormal...and other things. The characters are not former priests, though. Paul was working toward becoming one, but his path changed quite a bit in the first episode. ^^;

Oh and if the title of the show threw you off, you wouldn't be the only one. The original title for the show was "The Calling".

I too thought that the show was more about the paranormal than religion, which I found fantastic because I believe there is way too much religion being forced on everyone, and everyone thinking they are right when everyone else is wrong. That being said I'm finding it very hard not to say something bad about the main post, but why can't the show be taken at face value. Put your christian beliefs aside for 1 hour and go with what they're saying for the show. I don't get why people can't do that. And the only reason the "Second Coming" isn't scary to hear is because not everyone knows what the hell that is, everyone gets it when they say "the end of the world".

I loved this show so much and it was cancelled! I can't believe that people weren't watching this show, it was absolutely fantastic. I wish reality tv would take a hike and let the *real* actors take charge with sitcoms.

Coconut, I loved your post. I can do that. That´s entertainment, I think a movie is a movie, life is life, and religion is another story. And once there´s only around 200.000 places for saved souls, I´m not sure if it was left some ticket.

From what I understand, the show would have gotten more into religion but in a way that doesn't exclude any other groups. Catholics, Protestants, and Mormons all have very different views on Christianity so why would the show focus on only one belief system?

The show IS deep - much deeper than any other supernatural show - and you have to remember that the writers purposely went light on touchy religious manner and in the first episode Alva even says his group investigates ALL KINDS of paranormal phenomena, including miracles, which may be the miracles of either God or Satan.

Oh man I completely agree. Sure television is often meant to provoke some thought (well not that often but some shows are) but they're also meant to provide entertainment. Let it do that. Just this once. Man oh man.
