SHOW don't tell!

I found this series fascinating but flawed. I kept wishing that stupid narrator would just shut up and let us WATCh and HEAR what was going on! There could have been so much more drama on this show. But too much narration almost ruined it! From my high school English teacher, "Show don't tell!"

I found the voice of the narrator extremely irritating.

I didn't mind the narration as a feature, but their choice of narrators bothered me a lot because she reminded me way too much of Marlene Sanders of HBO's Autopsy fame (a series I loved and know well). I kept expecting, after some of the pregnant pauses, for her to mention dead body discoveries! It was really hard for me to get past that.

I loved the narrator... she's one of the best I've heard.

reply

Me too. I thought the narration was fine.

reply

I liked the narration too. I thought that it add to the story.

"Shut your smart mouth," I've heard that line before.

I totally agree. Her voice is annoying. It would have been better to have a black screen with white words briefly describing how it was back then, before seeing how the House families were living. It breaks reality and takes you out of the viewing experience to hear that woman talk.

reply

No, no, no!! I am not talking about the VOICE of the narrator or the fact that they had a narrator. I am talking about the narrator TELLING us things that would be more interesting to SEE. It was the overuse of the narrator that was so annoying. Instead of telling us about an argument between two cast members, let's SEE it.

I couldn't agree more. I'm just 18 minutes into the first episode and I came here to see if anyone else had the same complaint. I don't think I am going to go much further. I want to see all the details....not gloss over them and hear about their feelings.....I frankly don't care. Just show me the nuts and bolts.
