Does anybody know if they will be releasing this on dvd?

It was announced last year that the series would be released and know it's been to be announced. What is the story with this?

reply

Not really sure what the deal is. Went to Borders the other day and the system there says it's out of print. Never released, now it's out of print, kinda frustrating.

reply

I haven't been able to find it on DVD, but TNT has been running some of the episodes late at night. I think Ed O'Neil did a great job in it. They screwed up the show when they dumped Ethan Embry. It went nowhere with that other crew they put in to replace him. Too bad!

reply

Those "other crew" did a great job!!!! Why couldn't anyone see that?!

I would think, that with the enormous popularity of Desperate Housewives and Eva Longoria, that someone would want to release this if for no other reason than, "Hey! Look at Eva before DH!" I mean, they're releasing Lois and Clark, and I doubt it had absolutely NOTHING to do with Teri's sudden re-rise in fame.

That's a good point..

Season 1 owned. They totally butchered Season 2.

If only season 1 is on DVD I'll be happy.

reply

Hey, Season 2 was just as good as 1!!!

I can see what people are getting at, but you know what? I gotta defend this as well as a movie. It's my instinct.

At least your being nice about it, collect. I appreciate it.

Yes, I am a Desmond fan and I own Taken. Very good. I would say my favorite of all is part 4.

^lol good argument

/sarcasm

Season 1 is much better than Season 2. It felt like a real gritty cop show and gave me a reason to watch TV again.

reply

Why ty.

Also Sarcasm.

The Last thing I wanna hear right now is a bunch of sarcasm.

I still stand true what I say and I don't care if you like it or not.

looks like I'm a year late on responding. Season 2,episode: '17 in 6' The begining the shaking camera work was gritty and great music and the last scene with ? curtis and little moe standing on the porch during the showdown was heartbreraking " I gottcha moe, I gottcha" I've read Curtis is a broadway actor.

You don't think the release of Lois & Clark had something to do with the popularity of Smallville and the release of the older Superman series on DVD as well? How about the fact that they're working on releasing a new Superman film? Perhaps the release of Lois & Clark was to probe the interest in the Superman character to make sure the movie was still going to do well?

Look at the re-release of the Batman movies...you going to tell me that was done because Tim Burton made a comeback with Willy Wonka? Because Halle Berry as Catwoman did SO WELL, they thought it'd be kewl to show us how much better the character was played by Pfieffer? Because Arnie was Mr. Politics and they'd released Terminator movies enough for the time being (3 different versions of both T2 and T1)? Nuh uh, it's all about the big current and future film releases.

Same with Bewitched and the Bewitched DVD releases and a number of other TV series that they just HAD to remake. The Pink Panther cartoon box set due to be released this past summer was delayed because the Steve Martin flop is now due to be released next year instead.

I'm not saying Teri's "re-rise" to fame had NOTHING to do with it, but seriously...I'm certain there were people actually asking for the series to be released and it helps give a good push for the character with the movie coming. Or hey, maybe it was because Dean Cain did SUCH a good job on Ripley's? *shudder*

Hawkeye

P.S. Now let's all pause and thank the big man above that they gave up on the Nicholas Cage in the red cape and tights idea! *phew* And let us all hope that the original Batman series doesn't take too much longer to get finalized and cleared to be released on DVD.

As best as I can tell, Season 1 was all set for a DVD release and when Season 2 didn't live up to ABC's ratings expectations the Season 1 DVD set was cancelled.

Going by episode count, they could release both Seasons in one box set. Why it hasn't happened yet baffles me.

There is a DVD with two episodes from Season 1 out there that you can sometimes pick up on eBay. It was a sampler sent around to get the show in the running for an Emmy award.

I think they should give it a chance on DVD.
In Germany it runs quite good at the moment. They re-started it directly after the last episode got on air.
Why not release the whole series in one box and make some money with it?
It's senseless to release the two short seasons separately, but together it's probably gonna work. The names of Eva Longoria and Ed O'Neill should manage, to make a good deal out of it.

In my opinion it's difficult to find a cop show that combined coolness, good stories and deeply described characters, especially Ed O'Neill's narrating Joe Friday, better than "L.A. Dragnet" did it. Maybe the original was more realistic stuff, but what's so bad about the second best cop show ever?! :-))
I really loved "Kojak" and "Miami Vice", but if I had to decide, I would chose to buy "L.A. Dragnet" definitely.
I agree, the second season was quite weak, but the first 12 episodes were something like fulmillment for a cop show. The season contained everything I expect from a cop show and I always have a great time watching it.
Believe me, I nearly never watch TV directly, but record movies on tape and watch it later, but every sunday after 10 p.m., when they run two episodes "L.A. Dragnet" I'm right infront of my TV and enjoy great entertainment... and I really don't care, if I have slept long the nights before or not! :-))

Back in 2003 Season 1 was to be released on November 11th by Universal and they cancelled it during the merger with NBC. Here are the facts: http://www.tvshowsondvd.com/news/Dragnet/731

Does anyone have this series on a home brewed DVD set? Or VHS? Contact me if you do, please.

Don't know if it helps or not, but if you're a US resident, all of the first season episodes are now available on AOL Video. The link is here.

I, unfortunately, don't have access to the video, since I live outside of the US, and AOL has blocked proxy servers and any other workaround I can think of. If anyone has a way to capture it and send a DVD-R, I am willing to compensate for the effort - contact me pm please.

Most episodes are up on Hula...not all but a lot of them.

I still maintain episode 5 season 1 was some of the best Network TV drama since MASH.

The show didn't need to be redesigned for season 2, it was okay the way it was, in fact it was awesome. Season 2 wasn't as terrible as people make it out to be, but season 1 was so much better it makes season 2 look bad.

reply

On youtube somebody stated, the changes for season 2 were made, because Ed O'Neill wanted less screen time.
I don't know, if it's true, but I believe it, because he had two very young daughters back then and probably wanted to spend more time with them.

It's sad on one hand, but on the other I totally understand it and this explanation is kind of comforting.
And yes...the more I watched season 2, the more I liked it. Most people say, it was bad, because there were half a dozen cops instead of two and it became 'West Coast Law & Order', but in my opinion this was no problem. If there was a problem about season two, it was the scripts, but also only one or two of them. Especially the last episode ('Killing Field') was very bad and sensational/gimmicky - it doesn't fit with season 1 at all -, but there were also some very great episodes, especially the first one with Roselyn Sanchez (her biggest in the series) and the episode with the beach murder, gay couple and swinger club.

And I really don't understand, why season 2 should be that similar to 'Law & Order'. Christina Changs part was never to some extent that big as the part of Sam Waterston as Jack McCoy and there were only 2 or maybe 3 real court scenes in the whole 10 episodes.
Moreover especially the fact there weren't two cops, but 5 or 6 anymore distinguishes season 2 from 'Law & Order'.
Maybe it was a bit similar to 'Special Victims Unit' but this one started only 2 and a half or 3 years before 'Dragnet', so I think it is no crime to start a similar concept anyway. SVU ist a variation of L & O, so why can't be 'L.A. Dragnet' a variation of 'Dragnet'...?

I still hope the 22 episodes will be out in one DVD box soon!
