In the book...

were people laughing part of Carries Imagination, or were they just laughing?

I didn't think it was a mistake for Stephen King to include Miss Desjardin to laugh. It was a realistic reaction. Like your first instinct to laugh when someone falls out of their chair. It doesn't mean you don't care if that person is hurt, but it strikes something psychologically in your brain that evokes an automatic response.

In fairness, that's not a proper analogy. For one, carrie was abused by her classmates all her life, and this was her shining moment, only to have it turn out to be another joke on her...so nothing really funny there. And secondly, we've all fallen off our chairs at one point in our life (or will ) so we can relate to that, but I don't think a teacher would laugh at a student who just got doused in pig's blood at the prom.

I agree with the above poster, the directors were wise to change that.

I've read Carrie many times. I don't remember the teacher laughing. I thought it was Carrie's imagination that everyone was laughing... I will have to go and read it again.
