Other great shows that were cancelled

Can anyone suggest some other great shows that were brilliant but cancelled too soon. Explian why it was so good and the reason for it being cancelled.

reply

I think the epitome of a cult-followed show prematurely killed would be Sports Night.

Joss Whedon's "Firefly."
Good Sci-fi shows are so few and far-between nowadays, and Firefly (along with the new BSG) is the best one I've seen in the past decade.
Entirely lovable cast of characters with a very down-to-earth group mentality.
Everything that's great about a western, only set 500 years in the future.
Funny, intelligent writing (though, being sci-fi, it's far-fetched stuff in this day and age).
I kick myself every day for not having supported and lauded it back in '02.
But I've got my complete series on dvd box set. And Serenity (the movie) just came out about a month and a half ago.
There is always the hope that it will continue to survive despite the general public's lack of awareness.

Also, Arrested Development. By far the best show I've ever seen in terms of sheer entertainment value.
Eight more episodes and AD is likely done for, condemned to exist only as a memory and about fifty reruns. Though I'm not so confident that those will even air.

FOX seems to have a knack for neglecting to promote those shows really worth watching.

And of course no, Fox have ruined it again with Arrested Development. I mean, I don't live in America, but I'm getting a damn fine idea that Fox are complete morons.

reply

Yeah, you're right. FOX people are morons, many a good show have been cancelled over at FOX.

THE INTERNET HAS BEEN AROUND LONGER THAN http://www.TOXICGREEN.com HAS BEEN.

reply

FOX cancelled (and brought back) Family Guy TWICE!!!! On two separate occasions. There's not really more you can add.

Also, they axed the critic just when it was starting to get great.

And, it seems Arrested is pretty much as god as gone as well sadly.

reply

Just have to say that I'm still pissed about 'Boomtown'. Possibly, the best show ever. 'Dead Like Me' is another one. It was on Showtime for 2 seasons, and I think they're fools for axing it. DLM was a visionary show, with great characters and brilliant writing. It was about a group of grim reapers, all of whom died ( over a space of about 80 years ) before their time. The theory behind it being that they all had unfinished business in their lives. It was interesting to see how the reapers would interact with the 'reapies' before they took their souls. It's a nice idea, that. They take your soul before you die, you feel no pain and, after you die, they usher you into the beyond. I cried during a few episodes, and laughed during ALL of them. 'Dead Like Me' is highly recommended. Both seasons are out on DVD.

High Incident, Only two full seasons were produced. Simply, the best cop show next to Homicide: Life on the Street.

I'll agree. Firefly was great! I just bought the box set and Serenity a few weeks/months ago(respectivly.)

So check out if you can

High Incident
Brooklyn South
Firefly
Nowhere Man
Strange Luck

There are many, many others! Yet I don't have time now to recommend.

Homicide:Life on the Street was/is the best show EVER on television.

Stop global whining!

Farscape : It was one of the finest sci/fi series ever created. Until it was cancelled by idiots in Sci-Fi Channel.

reply

Soybean, As of 1/15/07 I am still pissed that it was taken off TV. I still watch the dvd set and can't believe what NBC did. To all the stars of Boomtown my thanks for giving us some great acting and work that will never be forgotten. Also you may want to watch and buy Band of Brothers. Donnie Wahlberg and Neil Macdonell are in it and you can see them and others from Boomtown show their great talent. My Best, Rich S.

reply

Heyjohnny40! As of 1/16/07 I'm still pissed, too. Band of Brothers was produced by the folks who brought Boomtown to us. Which is why I think Boomtown was made at all. There are a couple of episodes of Boomtown that feature some BoB alums. In case it wasn't obvious, I love Band of Brothers, too. In fact I remember thinking ( after Boomtown got the axe ) 'Why doesn't HBO pick up the show..?'

You also might want to check out 'Ravenous' Neal McDonough is in it. Small part, but he rocks it. And if you haven't seen 'The Sixth Sense' do. Donnie's awesome!!!

What knockers!
Oh, thank you, doctor.

"Family Guy" is really quite a terrible show, so that's no point against Fox. I think to myself, "They've kept 'King of the Hill' all these years and they canned 'Family Guy' so maybe the folks at Fox are smarter than I thought." Though killing "Firefly" is a huge point against them and I agree about "The Critic."
Besides "Boomtown" and " Firefly" far the best show to meet an early death in recent years has to be "Freaks and Geeks."

reply

"Profit", a really slick and kind-of revolutionarry series about a manipulative employe of a multi-billion dollar company. It was around for just 8 episodes, but somehow the fans got their wish so a DVD of the series exists.

reply

Thanks to you, Bsinc!
Profit was an excellent show, that should have deserved at least one more season (in fact, Jim Profit was about to turn from corporate life to some political plots).
Maybe that show was too dare for its time of release (april '96).

Anyway, I enjoyed it on september '97, on french cable TV, as I was returning from my draft time.

A great TV moment...

I think three of the greatest disasters when it comes to cancellations were as follows:
1: Cupid (Only lasted about 13 episodes, but was the best dramedy I have seen in my life and I have watched a lot of shows. Jeremy Piven was unforgettable and just becuase of him this would bad enough, but everything in here clicked well. The idea was fresh and it worked thanks to the superb writing. A lot to laugh about, a lot to think about and feel... and a little mystery to keep everyone on their toes and guessing. A damn shame. There was a lot of angry people when this one got canned. I was one of them. Unfortunately....)
2: My So Called Life (I don't even know if I need to say anything else... probably the most famous series that barely lasted a season. This was high quality drama that was probably too good for tv and just had to go... it rocketed Claire Danes on the scene... and gave the girls a new salivating outlet in Jared Leto. Same authors were responsible for probably the best family drama ever, that has also come and gone way too fast even if it did manage three seasons: Once And Again. This was brilliant in every possible way. It was here that was first evident that Evan Rachel Wood is gonna be the huge star of tomorrow. These shows hit closer to real life than the "reality" shows of any sort... which is probably why wide audience is scared of it.)
3: Dead Like Me (I think somebody mentioned it above alreday so I won't waste time with explaining this)

Some others that made me really sad when they ended prematurely: Undeclared, Joan Of Arcadia and now Arrested Development.... I'm probably forgetting something but no biggie :)

Another great show was Relativity. It wasn't as edgy as Boomtown or DLM, more like a sweet yet quirky romantic relationship-y show. Also it was really funny and witty. When Sex and the City first aired, it reminded me of Relativity. It starred David Conrad, Adam Golberg, Kimberley Williams and the great Jane Adams. I watched it ten years ago when it aired in France. All we had then was crap like BH90210 and this was a complete revelation for me. I'm now an avid moviegoer and this TV show was the first time I noticed the difference some camera work can make (the scene where Isabel and Leo pass each other without being able to talk because they are with their families - magic!!!)

reply

1. Once and Again!!!!! This was a great show about a divorced father and a soon-to-be
divorced mother meet and begin a romantic courtship which is always complicated by their
respective children and their own life problems. Okay, so I totally copied that line, but what
the heck.
And it stopped at a dramatic moment, when Mishha Barton was about to consumate her third
on-screen lesbian role! Her first was in 'Lost and Delirous' (Piper Perabo and Jessica Paré
really go at it while little roommate Misha Barton watches and Emily Vancamp (Everwood) catches
them as the little sister! Very hot); second one was in her present series 'The O.C.' with
that bar-girl, what's her face.
Anyway about Once and Again! it had this thing of inserted interviews in black
and white with the characters, and it was a total gimmick, but it was a GOOD gimmick! It worked!
High point for me were the therapy sessions with Evan Rachel Wood, not that i'm an anorexic 13
year old girl, far from it, i'm an 18 year old non-bulemic guy, but it still moved me. Dunno why. I have to admit that it was a bit annoying to see two women in their 40s with 17 year old children looking like 20 year olds, but that was the only negative thing about it.
Even the characters on Off-Centre bemoaned their demise!!! (On second thought, that might've been telling ....)

2. Firefly It was kinda weird in it's anti-big city, 'South will rise again'
message, but at the same time it was nicely done, sympathetic black characters, and totally hot females!!! I've never seen a show before or since, where it was virtually impossible to say
which of the FOUR female leads was the most beautiful! OK, since you hold a gun to my head,
I'd say Summer Glau, but I'd totally cut off my right .... pinkie for a chance to eat breakfast
with one of the other three ...

3.Dead Like me
For reasons mentioned above, but mostly because of the total
hotness of Ellen Muth and Laura Harris! Also, good acting by Britt McKillip [Joy: Where are my effing keys? Reggie Lass: Maybe they're in your effing purse. Joy: Reggie! Don't say effing!]

4. Odyssey 5 Really nice show, nice premisse, nice actors, cool black actress,
with a decent storyline for her self.

5. Now and again Most atrocious cliff hanger ending! I mean, you totally want to see what is gonna go on next season and then they cancel it! For the life of me ...

This my list of shows:

ThirdWatch
Johny Zero
Fastlane
Hack

reply

oh yeah!! FASTLANE!!! Prettiest looking show I've ever seen, man, the colours, the art
direction, the hot chicks, wow dude, that was totally cool. Also, decent black character
story line, although not as good as Mykelti Williamsons 'Fearless' from Boomtown, or Dennis Haysberths 'David Palmer' from '24'.

reply

Boomtown
Third Watch
King Pin

The list that comes to mind right now is:

Boomtown, just Netflixed it.
Karen Sisco, Carla and Bob just rocked.
Love Monkey, nobody was getting policed.
He and She, Dick Benjamin and Paula Prentiss are the ultimate couple.

Dead Like Me
Twin Peaks (Cancelled so much too soon...I need Agent Cooper! :P )

reply

Wow, whenever I see these kind of topics I instantly think of Profit, but never before have I actually seen it mentioned (and twice at that!). Freaks and Geeks, Undeclared, Strangers with Candy (not sure if it was canceled but 3 seasons aint enough!) Invader Zim, just a few of the great shows canceled before their time.

reply

I'm glad someone mentioned Strange Luck (1995), another Fox show, I believe, with the highly underrated D.B. Sweeney and Frances Fisher. It had kind of an X-Files feel but w/o the huge government conspiracy angle -- just paranormal stuff. I'd also like to mention the show Middle Ages, with Peter Riegert (Boone from Animal House, as well as Mac from Local Hero, and a bunch of other memorable performances), Michael O'Keefe (Duvall's tormented son Ben from the Great Santini, as well as the lead caddie Danny Noonan in Caddyshack, and the real-life husband of Bonnie Raitt for a while there -- talk about jealously; man oh man, I'd give my left arm to be Michael O'Keefe for one night during that marriage; few women on the planet could match Ms. Raitt's smoldering sex appeal) and the always great William Russ, well known to all Wiseguy fans (Russ called Terranova, and everyone else for that matter, "Buckwheat"). And since we're on the subject, there weren't too many shows that could match Wiseguy when it was "on" -- the Sonny Steelgrave (Ray Sharkey) arc, the Mel and Susan Proffitt arc that introduced Kevin Spacey ("the toes knows") to the American TV audience, the William Russ storyline, these were some of television's best episodes.

Happen to be browsing this and found this post. Yes! I really liked Fastlane... lots of elements. :)

Just started to catch the reruns of John Doe on scifi. Since I didn't see the last few episodes I don't know if it was cancelled (probably?) or if the story actually ended (does this ever happen? on any tv programme?). Regardless I'm tivo'ing all episodes and hope not to miss the ending this time round.

reply

space above and beyond(great scfi show with a great cliffhanger)

futurama(thank you fox may you get cancer)
now and again(why?brilliant show)
millenium(dark edgy great writing great acting so they cancel)
surface(just started watching pretty good show )
earth 2(great show nice cliffhanger)

I really enjoyed Wonderfalls which was on FOX. It had a great cast of quirky characters and it had real subtle humor. Again, FOX struck again and cancelled the show before they could even air all the episodes that were filmed. It wasn't really given a chance to find it's audience. Check out the dvd set it has all the episodes.

Also, the execs at the WB should have all been strung up when they cancelled Angel. I was so angry at the season/show cliffhanger. At least when Buffy was over they ended it reasonably. If I was and exec I don't think I would cancel my highest rated show on my network. But, I don't get paid the big bucks.

I know most people hated it, and I might get killed for this, but I really liked the show Touching Evil. I think it was on USA a few years back-never even finished season 1, but I found it pretty compelling.

As far as Boomtown, and I know I'm on the shows boards and I'll get the "If you don't like it, don't post on these boards" responses, but I netflixed it a few months back (never saw it when it originally aired) and it really gripped me...until the episode when Fearless took down the Russian mob...by killing them all. The show lost all realism and I didnt even watch another episode after that--up until then it was great (best theme music ever, btw). But between the cop going Rambo in the middle of LA and the intercut scenes of him and his army buddy (which further ruined it--Fearless was called like General or Colonel--something way way way to high ranking for his age [not to mention a general becoming...a detecitve? my ass], plus there were zero other soldiers around with them, including no medics when his buddy got shot).

Boomtown started well, got stupid midway through season one, though I can't speal for any episodes after that one I described. But Touching Evil was a really cool, gritty cop show, a kind of lesser amalgam of The Shiel and 24. Obviously Firefly goes on this list as well, btw.

Hey j4ny21, It's called Sweeps, they need to make something up that is crazy to get big numbers.

http://www.myspace.com/53745668 I aim to misbehave!

reply

Boz 705,

I know exactly what sweeps are, but a show that is supposed to be grounded in reality can still be compelling in sweeps without giving up that basis in reality. The Shield, NYPD Blue, Law & Order--they don't defy reality during sweeps, they make the cases bigger, ratchet up the drama, kill of a main character--you don't see Szipowitz (sp?) go all vigiliante on the Italian mafia.

Also, this episode came very early on in the series (less than 6 episodes in, as I recall), so it was in the can before the show began airing, which means this episode wasn't a result of the show's bad ratings, but was always intended to be part of the show.

Last, the show began in September--there are no October sweeps. November is sweeps month, and I'm almost positive that this was aired in October.

reply

Hey, j4ny21. Try not to think of that episode. Think of Fearless with his Army buddy, singing 'I Can See Clearly Now' I get misty eyed every time I hear that song now. Or hell, the first episode! I cried openly at that one. Caught completely off guard with that one. The writing was USUALLY stellar. Everyone is entitled to a *beep*

What knockers!
Oh, thank you, doctor.

reply

All I can think of when I think of Fearless and his Army buddy was that there was no army around and how fake the lack of extras made it all seem. It deprived me of any potential emotions to be felt during those scenes--that and the fact that I was laughing so hard at Fearless's idiotically high rank. To be honest, I don't really remember the case in the first episode though, but you might be right about it having been great.

I loved the angle this show took with the varying viewpoints, I LOVED the theme music, and I thought the acting was superb (but what else would you expect from a great TV cast like Williamson, Gedrick, Wahlberg, and McDonough?). The lack of proper police protocol (or are there actually cops that go into Rambo mode every so often) was so disturbing in its innanity that it single-handedly turned me off what had the potential to be a great show.

1. Playmakers (ESPN) - I've never seen another sports-related show like it. Interesting storylines, melodramatic at times, but nevertheless addicting. As it turns out, the show hit a little too close to home for the NFL and they basically strong-armed ESPN into cancelling it.

2. Carnivale (HBO) - I don't think that I've ever been so pissed about a cancellation. Total outrage. One of the most compelling shows that I've ever seen. Crazy flashbacks, unique characters, and one of the greatest TV feuds of our all-time ("the corrupt preacher" vs. "the chosen one"). Season 2 ended with the ultimate cliffhanger, then HBO yanked the carpet out from under us. No finality or closure. Fans are only left with "what might have been."

3. Deadwood (HBO) - Tough, gritty western that pulls no punches whatsoever. Yes, the profanity is pretty outrageous, but I'm not totally convinced that it's unnecessary. The show is well written, with interweaving storylines. Great stuff. Sad to see it coming to an end, but as high as the ratings are, they're apparently not high enough to offset the high production costs. Of course, that's HBO's excuse, but they're busy wasting money on crap like "Rome".

reply

"Robbery Homicide Division" Michael Mann is a genius period. If you like any of his films or tv shows, you have to see this. Does anyone know if there are any episodes on DVD?

reply

j4ny21 talks of the show not being based in reality, but then he mentions shows like the shield and 24.

reply

Wonderfalls
Boomtown
it actually broke my heart to see both of these go by the wasteside...

and, is Everybody hates Chris cancelled? Chris Rock is still funny!

also, The Tracy Morgan Show wasn't even given a chance. Bobb'e J. Thompson, the little boy that played "Jimmy", Tracy's youngest son, stole the show every episode. IMDB forgot to include him in the cast credits for that show, but his personal filmography page includes it.
