Wii re-release

Just read that Nintendo are planning to re-release this for Wii, the implication at present being that Corruption's control scheme will be available as an option. I really hope this is true - Prime 1 is the best of the trilogy IMHO but the joypad controls make it seem a bit clunky after playing Corruption. With Wii controls Prime 1 would be great.

The only stumbling block would be how to implement weapon select as well as visor select - I read that Retro went with a stackable beam system for Corruption because the Wii controller doesn't have enough buttons to implement an interchangeable one.

Actually yes it does when you're talking about Prime 1 and 2. You don't need hyper mode button in 1 and 2 because you're not corrupted like in 3. So by hitting that button, you can then select your beam weapon much like you select your visor in 3.

When I heard this news I was very stoked. I believe it's been confirmed at a Nintendo conference, along with Pikmin 1&2, DK Jungle Beat, and Mario Power Tennis. I personally think it's a great idea and revising the game with slightly updated graphics and a better control scheme will make Prime 1 near perfect. I might even finish Metroid Prime 2 this time!

Yeah, I realised that a little while after my original post... duh. A few changes that would be nice IMHO:
- Updating the scan visor in Prime 1 with the full-size colour overlays used in 2 and 3, so that scannable objects are more obvious.
- Releasing Prime 1 and 2 on Wii in a single package for £20-ish (after all they are old now).

That would be awesome. I'm hoping that some things implemented from the European release will be in this one. Namely in Prime 1 when you beat the Elite Pirate, some of the Metroids are changed over to Fission Metroids (by far harder in my opinion). They got different features (not that many), bug fixes and different scans due to it being released later than the US version. It's not that much of a difference but Fission Metroids would make it much tougher and I'm all for a new challenge.

I think there's a slight graphics update. Probably just textures, lighting and minor stuff like that since they'd have to redo most everything else if they wanted to overall the graphics too much.

I live in the UK so already had the European release of Prime 1... yeah, we got some extras over the US build, such as the things you mention but also e.g. Samus' suit subtly saying "recording to logbook" when you scanned a new entry - always liked that bit of extra polish. Have to wait and see which version they base the Wii port on, hopefully it'll be the one with the most features.

I don't think it would be too difficult to implement the new scan visor - I assume all it does is calculate the visible outline of scannable objects before applying a transparency.

Fission Metroids, forgot about them. I don't know if it was the same in the US build but they were the only type of Metroid in the final area of the game (Meteor Crater?) and were a real pain. You'd jump most of the way towards the top only to get intercepted by one mid-jump and fall right back to the bottom. Argh!

Awesome. I've heard that after you beat the Elite Pirate in the Metroid Prime 1 European version that there are some of the Fission Metroids in the Phazon mines before you get to the Meteor Crater. I don't know how true that is, or maybe you just bypassed them. I'm wondering now if that's true.

My bad, I meant Omega Pirate.

Hmm, been a while since I've played this but that sounds right. I think if you backtrack through the mines, to pick up any missed items after beating the Omega Pirate, some of the ordinary Metroids are replaced with Fission types. I suppose it is to keep the challenge level up, the ordinary Metroids take less energy off you once you get the Phazon Suit, plus they don't split when shot.

I am wondering whether or not the Wii re-release will be made available outside Japan - according to Wikipedia (salt required I know) so far it has only been confirmed for Japan sometime in 2009. Nintendo would be idiots not to release it in the US and PAL territories, especially given these regions' penchant for FPS's.

reply

Yeah, I have a feeling it will make it to the US and other countries. I mean the Prime series was given to a US developer for the very reason that it's been more popular outside of Japan. I'd imagine that if it does hit America it would logically go to PAL as well.
