Someone needs to explain this movie for me...

Was the dictator Bob Dylan's dad? What was the deal with the black prostitute and the flashbacks? Why was Bridges portrayed as a 'villain'? What was he doing that was "out of line" when asking Dylan about Hendrix and Woodstock? What the hell was the point of Val Kilmer? Why did Delroy Lindo threaten to kill Jessica Lange if the concert failed(a little excessive)? Was Mickey Rourke a pervert? If not why did Bridges say a pervert is the new top man? Why did Bridges have an ankle bracelet? What was Ed Harris doing in there? Why did Jessica Lange blame Dylan at the end? And once again why did everyone hate Bridges? What was so villainous about him?

you got me. none of those questions were answered in the slightest.

it was just sort of a silly romp, upon a pretense of a story. anyway, we got to see bob clown around with some pretty good actors. i spec they had the bones of a screenplay and slapped it together in a few days.

in a world where everyone has an opinion on everything, you get a lot of bad opinions - me

Was the dictator Bob Dylan's dad? * Yes

What was the deal with the black prostitute and the flashbacks? *

Why was Bridges portrayed as a 'villain'? * Dylan sees journalism as a corruption of art. He has never trusted journalists.

What was he doing that was "out of line" when asking Dylan about Hendrix and Woodstock?

What the hell was the point of Val Kilmer? * An interesting scene, but like many...I'm not sure it has hidden meaning. Like the scene with Fred Ward in the bar...it's just riffing.

Why did Delroy Lindo threaten to kill Jessica Lange if the concert failed(a little excessive)? * Everything about the movie is "excessive" These are not characters, they are archetypes. They all symbolize something else on a symbolic level. Lindo's character was the the "power broker" to whom success and money are more important that art or life.

Was Mickey Rourke a pervert? If not why did Bridges say a pervert is the new top man? * I suspect "yes" although his perversion may not be sexual.

Why did Bridges have an ankle bracelet? * Symbolism. He is a journalist...but there is no "free" press.

What was Ed Harris doing in there? * He is vaudville. The face of old theater. You don't see the artist, just the mask. He is, I think, what the title refers to on one level.

Why did Jessica Lange blame Dylan at the end? * Because artists never truly save the world, but in our hearts we think they should. He is just a singer. A song and dance man. All he gives us is art. She wanted more. She wanted magic, power, change. He just sang songs and left. In that way, he was a fraud, even if he never claimed to be more...at least in her eyes.

And once again why did everyone hate Bridges? What was so villainous about him? * His character's name is "Friend" but he uses those around him. By his nature, as a journalist, he is a betrayer. (Again, that's a reflection of Dylan's mistrust of journalism.)
