All the people in the film, with the exception of the bar owner did not do much about their situation when they could have. Why do you think? I mean, I do understand some of them were trying, but of course they were not putting in their 100% and just gave up. What are your views on that?
shareThey probably felt they didn't have enough skills to have ANY job, so after being rejected for the one job they think they can do, they gave up. They were also too proud to beg and felt that having dignity was more important.

Some of them did obviously try, the guy who dyed his hair tried REAL HARD. It's not as easy as it seems. When industrial towns start to put down industries they are left with thousands of men who worked there all their life and are no longer useful for much. There's also depression and alcoholism that comes with it, making things worse.
