I think he's sooo pretty in this movie!

He plays Philip, recently crowned king of France. He officially comes to King Henry's court for Christmas, and intends to have his sister Alais marry Richard (Henry's oldest son) - she had been sent there as a child, to be married to Richard when she grew up, but Henry eventually took her as a mistress and refused to have her marry as planned. Like in any arranged marriage, Alais 'came with a land', which was to become the property of her future husband. Philip's primary intention, then, is to have Henry honour the commitment or return the land (yeah, the sister wasn't terribly important). During the negotiations, we get a glimpse of his relationship with the various members of the family. He has a memorable scene with Richard and (later) King Henry.

... it's also the first time I found JRM genuinely attractive in a movie (which is saying a lot, for me), so even if you're not into historical/political dramas, see it if you can. Er, he doesn't have a huge part - in that he's not in the movie from beginning to end - but it's an influential one.

You should watch Tangled, he is so sexy in that. Also he has a small part in Prozac Nation but I think he looks the best in that film.

OCTANE. He looks amazing in Octane... (Which is also known as "Pulse" sometimes.. not sure guess it depends on where you are from?)

reply

You should see Velvet Goldmine!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

reply

match point, small part in mission impossible 3, and most definitely VANITY FAIR

reply

Gormenghast. First thing I ever saw him in, and still the benchmark!! Steerpike was such a hideous character in the book, but in the movie you just couldn't hate him, as it was JRM...

reply

He is so fair like French Lily! But why didn't he do a French accent? It could have made him even sexier (if that's ever possible :). He sounded like king of Ireland!

reply

Because all the characters are supposed to be speaking French, with regional accent differences. (Eleanor's native language was Occitan, but one assumes that with her husband and family in the play, she's speaking Langue d'Oïl French for their benefit).

reply

Not to parse words but actual Alais was suppose to Marry Henry III. Henry III dies and his death throws the issue of who Alais marries into question. Henry II wants John, of Magna Carta fame, to become king. Henry's estrange wife, Elanore, wants Richard, of Crusade - Lion Heart- Robin Hood fame, to be king.

reply

Actually, that's not right. Henry the Young King was actually married to Alaïs' sister, Marguerite. Alaïs was supposed to marry Richard. I also recall reading that the Vexin was Marguerite's dowry, but it was to be returned when Young Henry died. Then, to keep it, Henry II agreed to marry Alaïs to Richard, and we all know how that turned out...

I think for the purpose of the play they gloss over Marguerite.

he makes a funny, interessting King of France, I liked his role. If you like Jonathan then watch it.

Spoiler:
One of Henry's sons is in love with him. Hahahahha, that's hot.

reply

Ana - you have never been more right. Yes, yes it is hot. In the extreme. But what I want to know is... who the hell ISN'T in love with JRM?!? Any takers?? Because I certainly am. He has been particularly wonderful in certain roles (this one), understated in others (Declan), but his most perfect and prime performance was Brian in Velvet Goldmine. It showcased the incredible talent he has for making us pity and adore the wicked, while at the same time it showcased his incredible arse. Whether you're in it for his magic or his eyes, that movie is gold. Get it... goldmine?!?! Muahahaha. Okay I suck...

Don't forget, the original King Philip was played by Timothy Dalton, who was also quite hunky. One of my favorite bits is when Henry says, "We could have peace!" and Philip says, "Piss on your peace."

Still, I thought JRM was perfectly appropriate and did a lovely job in the part. I've been watching him since "Velvet Goldmine" and I'm enjoy his steady rise to fame. Fabulous and sexy and cold in "Match Point" as well.

So? Nobody remembers his excellent work as the hunky coach in Bend It Like Beckham?

reply

I watched this with one of my friends and she said the first time he came out the he looked gay. I know this seems really random.

I really enjoyed JRM's take on the role. He isn't rattling Henry II, but you get the sense that his Philip Augustus will one day have the upper hand over the Plantagenets, Also they did a nice job of showing how put together and commanding young Philip Augustus was in contrast to Prince John, although both were close in age.

It's also striking how JRM ends up playing Henry VIII in a very similar manner to his take on Philip Augusus.

reply

He's adorable, his restrained acting (or perhaps his uncertainty about acting) fits the role, he steals every scene he is in, and the director provides entrances and exits that make him seem kingly. His attempts to rattle Henry's/Stewart's cage are ineffectual, but that fits the character.

He really does stand out in this film, though, because he is absolutely the most attractive person in it.
