I don't get why Elf is so beloved.

Help me understand why Elf is such a beloved Christmas movie now. I tried watching it for only the second time and couldn't stand it.

reply

It had a couple funny parts, but the movie itself was pretty obnoxious.

I think it would have been better without Ferrell, tbh. I don't mind the guy, but he was way too over the top for me in this.

I don't know why they picked Farrell. He's not funny and he's got no charm, something the character of Buddy needed.

reply

he is a poor man chevy chase.

take chevy chase and remove charismas and you get will ferrals.

reply

I don't disagree, but to be fair, Chase actually was funny and sometimes charming when he was younger (I find him intolerable now). I never found Farrell to be either funny or charming ever.

"but to be fair, Chase actually was funny and sometimes charming when he was younger"

yes i like chevy chase he is funny and has charisma. he is not in same league as legend like john candys or even aykroyd or murray etcs, but chase did have talents as funny man. he can carry a movie, which take talent to do.

"(I find him intolerable now)"

does he even act now? have not seen him in anything for long time!

"I never found Farrell to be either funny or charming ever."

yes. will ferrals is funny to philistines. he is the philistine's comedy actor haha (no offence to peoples who like him).

I haven't seen Chase in anything recently, but just watching him on interviews and such and he seems like a totally humorless bore who believes his poo doesn't stink - kind of like what happened to Alec Baldwin.

"but just watching him on interviews and such and he seems like a totally humorless bore who believes his poo doesn't stink"

yes. chase is good comedy actor but he is not nice man apparantly. he make mean spirited comment about people a lot. still, give me mean man who can act (chase) over nice man who cant act (will ferral) anydays!

"I haven't seen Chase in anything recently"

yes i think he is almost retire now. he look terrible now. ironic considering apparently he make fun of peoples faces all the time when he on SNL. he call bill murray uglys all time. he make fun of john candy so much that john candy put him in headlock and wouldnt release chase from it for long time hahahahha.

I think when performers lose that bit of humbleness and gratefulness as they achieve widespread respect, the latent likeable qualities disappear and they become unlikeable on screen. Too bad.

Will Farrell can create amazing skits and I suspect that people keep thinking that one of these days his comedic brilliance displayed in skits will translate into films and it ends up being a massive failure every single time.

Personally, I think Farrell is great - in skits. The only reason why his films are horrible is because of crappy scripts. It should be noted that many of those scripts were written by him - oopsie.
Key and Peele were also great in skits, but when they tried making a comedy feature film, it was utter shite. It's interesting, because many of their skits looked like they could be easily expanded into feature films .... which is why it was so surreal seeing them fail on such epic scale when attempting it.

I think they should all take more time on developing scripts - a good script takes no less time to develop than a good standup routine. If they are good at developing skits, they should create a feature film which would allow them to use various skit scenarios - like a film about conmen, for example (I keep thinking of Burn Notice and the various cons featured there).

We all have our preferences. I saw Elf once and thought the script was good enough, but I found Ferrell distracting. But your comment is certainly fair and you're not alone. Elf's ratings are good. Personally, I just don't get it.

It's literally 2 hours of Will Ferrell acting like a man child. It's loved by the same idiots who love Step Brothers.

reply

I can laugh at some things in Step Brothers but Will Ferrell does play the same character in every movie.

reply

Step Brothers is funny and I love it.
This one is not funny and it's boring.
The two movies don't share much of an audience.

reply

"It's loved by the same idiots who love Step Brothers."

hahahaahahahahahaha!!!!!

so true hahahahahahaha!!!

reply

It is just terrible. It's an absolute stinker of a film. In 2003 many film critics and people detested it. You're just seeing the film with a level head

reply

I saw it once with my kids, and couldn't wait for it to be over. The concept isn't bad, the execution is. Is it too soon for a reboot?

reply

Spiderman got 2 reboots in the space of five years so why not.

reply

I don't get it either. Honestly, anything with Will Ferrell in it is bound to be dog shit.

reply

Glad to see I'm not the only one who hated this movie. I suppose I have a strong aversion to Will Ferrell because I have never found him funny. "Elf" often comes up on lists that recommend movies for the holidays. Those lists must be compiled by people with rotten taste because other boring, unfunny Christmas movies like The Santa Clause and Christmas with the Kranks end up on those same lists (presumably made by writers who never saw a film before 1990).

reply

I think it’s great! Touching, funny, Christmas-ey in all the rights ways. I think Farrell is pitch perfect. The only person I could see doing it better was Robin Williams circa his Mork days. I understand that people don’t like Elf and maybe Farrell has something to do with it, but I just don’t see what the problem is.

reply

Well I wouldn't say I love it, but I do enjoy watching it. It is sort of odd how it's basically been immortalized up there with A Christmas Story and Home Alone. I just saw 2 or 3 Elf branded food items at Walmart.

reply

I could never understand this film. I wanted to love it. I really liked the Bob Newhart cameos...But elves are supposed to be intelligent and human boys are smart as well...just more animalistic. So technically we could have had a super intelligent, street smart Tarzan elf in this scenario. But instead we have.....

reply

I'll credit to it for having James Cann in it. He was always such a good actor.
