I know in recent years its found an audience and some people are calling it a classic. But back then a lot of people thought it was pretty terrible. Yes it made money but it wasn't thought of anything other than a crude comedy (and there was many of them in the early 2000's). I'm honestly surprised how many people well regard this movie these days. Maybe it vibes better with the culture now as far as humor.

That's not really true. I saw it in the theater when it was new, and remember it being very popular and well-received. Perhaps critics didn't like it? That I don't recall, but I do that it was generally being spoken of as a "new Christmas classic" even while it was still in its initial theatrical run.
shareuh I liked it just as much in 2003 as i do now, and I'm sure many did. It only got even bigger now because more than 1 generation of fans has seen it now and like it, and it's easier for people to give it a chance on stuff like Netflix now rather than buying a ticket to see it at the movies.
