Who else would you cast as Buddy?

Don't waste your time making a post saying something like "Will Ferrell is Buddy." (awaiting the very first poster to think he's funny and say that anyway)

The last time I saw this movie, I was actually just thinking of this in my head and tried to fit other actors in the role based on certain scenes. One person I came across in my head was Jim Parsons. He would have been too young then and probably now would be too molded as Sheldon to differentiate the character, but I just think he would have been pretty funny in the role if he chose to be outgoing enough.

Parsons was 30 ten years ago. But he wasn't well-known enough.

I think Jim Carrey could have pulled it off, and maybe even been a better Buddy than Ferrell. Or maybe Jason Bateman.

Amazing, I thought Parsons was only about 33-35 right now. My, time sure flies.

I'm trying to imagine Carrey, and make sure that he can play enough of an "innocent" and "naive" role. Of course he is kind of like that in Dumb & Dumber, but you also need him to be just adorable enough. I could see it I guess. Maybe a bit on the too old end of the spectrum this time, though.

He almost always plays a nut though - so too predictable. People may have just thought, Oh no another Jim Carrey Vehicle. Of course he is an elf, what else is new?

What would have been interesting is him playing the Dad. I would not have liked it though...

Jim Carrey or Bill Murray

Chris Farley would have been perfect.

If he hadn't been dead for six years, that is.

It's funny you say Jim Parsons because he played Buddy in the musical TV movie.

They must have read my suggestion. 

I had never heard about the animated TV version with Jim Parsons, but about an hour ago I read your comment and then found it online and watched it. I am a devoted fan of the original film, but I have to say, i didn't hate the animated version. It was different, of course, and the songs were hit or miss, but I enjoyed Parsons' characterization of Buddy, and the rest worked ok for me. Thanks for the tip!

John Candy would have been in interesting choice, had he been alive.
