How come this dosent get as much recognition

i mean the 80s series was great and all but personaly i thought this was even better it was like a batman tas for tmnt it was truer to the comics, the stories were great, action packed etc.. is it because it wasnt like the turtles from the 80s/90s generation that old school fans hate it? think about it this is based of the mirage version which came from that same generation so what is it? someone help me!!!!!!!

reply

Not everybody knows about the original Mirage comics. Everyone who remembers the '87 cartoon from their childhood remember and associate the turtles with goofy, pizza loving, catch-phrase shouting teenagers. When they watch this cartoon, which is more serious like the Mirage comic, they expect goofy teens, not serious, 'brooding' characters (Which could be why everyone says Mikey's the only one that acts right, since he's the goofy one).

I grew up with the 80s cartoon, but I also was aware of how awesome the comics were. While I enjoyed the 80s cartoon while I was a kid, now it just seems really cheesy. It didn't age very well to my brain. But the new series is very good, well at least up to what I've seen (Season 5).

It'd be awesome if they could make a movie totally based on the comics, to show the true origin of the series to more people.

I very much recall how bloody the comics were!

It's a combination of things really.

For one, it's basically a remake or reimagining of the comics (which were never as popular as the cartoon) and the first '87 cartoon. Remakes are rarely regarded as better than the original.

Two, although it's more in line with the tone of the original comics, it deviates signicicantly from both the comics and the original show, which is going to p*ss off fans of both.

Three, cartoons these days struggle to find an audience. It's not like it was back in the 80's and early 90's where you could rattle off a list as long as an arm of cartoons that are considered classic and popular. In the current environment of television it would be virtually impossible for any cartoon to ever be as popular as the '87 series was.

Four, while this show was better from a technical standpoint and in terms of continuity, I think it lacked the charm and magic that the first series carried.

Five, back in the 80's the Turtles were a pretty fresh and original concept. Fast forward 20 years or so and with all the rip-offs there have been, even a new show featuring the Turtles is going to feel stale and make certain people feel "this again?" or "been there, done that". I would argue that many (if not the majority) of fans of the 2003 series were fans of the '87 series. I don't know if they really developed a newer audience with this series.

Generally, I think people who watched the 80´s series are too lost to nostalgia and what they perceive as canon (despite it actually being the canon-breaker) to recognise the brilliance, the improvement, of the new packaging.

Personally, being one of them kids who grew up on TMNT, having watched it in recent years, I've found many flaws which were corrected by the new series. A continuous story arc, for one. It's a cartoon, done largely in the shape of a proper live action show. Cartoons with little to no connection between the episodes apart from the main characters and the setting, that's something one outgrows really quickly (or at least I did). To use a cliché, it's so 80's cartoons, aimed mainly for those of a more immature taste in fiction and storytelling. Following a multi-episode story arc takes an attention span wider than that of many 5-10 year-olds.

That said, this isn't perfect, and it breaks canon in many ways, and quite frankly the whole future tour arc is uninspired and dull, but apart from that, it really shows a new and more mature side to cartoon. Just like comics, as a medium, never was aimed solely at kids, cartoons doesn't have to be either, and this show shows it off beautifully.

Agree. A lot of times when people nerd rage on "remakes" its mostly due to just nostalgia. And never really give it a chance.

I was born in 86. I grew up watching TMNT each and every day after school. By 2003 I'm 17. But I love cartoons. And I watched this show all the time too. And 2003 is much better for all the reasons people that actually watched it have stated.

Nostalgia is fun in and all but truth is 2003>80s

i was born in 77 so i'm a older broad then you kids here. i remember the 80's cartoon very well. but truth be told it hasn't aged well. HOWEVER keep in mind the first season (especially the pilot) was actually verry dark and violent. remember beebob and rocksteady used LIVE ammo. but it got toned waaay down in the latter seasons. even as a kid i noticed.

the 2003 series is just far superior. better animated, better written, better voice acted. it's only flaw was the uninspired theme song. it was solid up until the studio started interfering and sent them to the future and kidified it. most don't consider that era part of the 03 series (or back to the sewer for that matter).

You're wrong. Classics are classics for a reason. The new crap is lazy.

So what you're saying is that you prefer horribly dated cartoons over solid masterpieces?

Because Turtles Frank Miller-style is an acquired taste.

This is certainly not better than the classic series.

That's wrong in so many ways. The original series was just a cast-in attempt that hasn't aged well at all. This show however is well acted, well animated and it'll certainly hold up much better that the original. You really need to rethink your life.

Because people still think that the original series was the best, and it really isnt. I remember watching the original series when I was really young and then trying to watch them again when I was older and I found it unbearable. Its too kidish and childish almost.

This series, I started watching from the very beginning. I remember watching the first episode when it aired in February of 2003, and I loved it. From then, it remains as one of my favourite cartoons ever. The animation style was so dark, the dialogue and the chemistry between the turtles are more mature enough that adults can watch. The episodes, story archs, and character developments are all just amazing. It reminded me of cartoons from the 90s, which shared the same mature sentiment. I love this series and it will always be the best TMNT cartoon ever. Not even the new series can topple this one.

Arguing with 87 fans is just a waste of time. I grew up with the 87show too but this is how tmnt supposed to be. You don't know how many times I argued with them and when I tell them it's close to the comics, the only response is "um, yeah we'll, and a load of bs ensues from their mouths.

I even had a mom that told me that tmnt was never meant to be dark. Says who? You or Peter laird? Keep in mind, I am not forcing anyone to choose the 2k3 series, all of this is when the 87 fans start spewing trash and when I correct them, they refuse to let go their pride.

Now nick has brought back the 87 show into the 2012 show. Sadly, me and my friends who are turtle fans have stopped watching the show. The new one started off well but it lost it's staying factor. The only saving grace is the shredder. Make the turtles dark again. The 2012 is a step backwards, not forward.

87 fans can be ridiculous!

Truthfully, I don't think they marketed it too well. I grew up watching the '87 cartoon and loved it. It's not the best now, but I never knew this series existed until long after it was over. The TMNT craze had died down and I had moved onto other things. When I found out about this show, I had to download it on a torrent to even watch it. They didn't release proper DVDs, unless you count the confusing story arcs ones. So, when I watched this one, I immediately enjoyed it more than the '87 show and while I find the '87 show more in tune with my memories, I like rewatching this one better.
