Northam Singing?

Just out of interest does anybody know if it actually was Jeremy Northam who was singing in this excellent film or was his voice being dubbed?

reply

It was being dubbed.

I thought it was totally obvious that Northam was lip-synching to original Dean Martin recordings.

There were parts that I noticed that the lips did not match the sound.

But anyone familiar with Dean Martin's singing voice, knows that this film was done with original Martin recordings. That was Dino's voice.

yeah- no mistaking that voice, it's one of a kind

I worked on the set of "Invasion", where Jeremy played Nicole Kidman's first husband. As I stood at craft service, "grazing" as most actors are wont to do, I started singing "Everybody Loves Somebody" (I happen to be a Dean Martin trib artist). A voice behind me in line joined in, and Jeremy and I finished the song together. That was certainly cool! Yes, he synched Dino's tunes in the film, but he is certainly capable of doing his own vocals.

That doesn't mean anything. Even if a performer does his own singing, the song is recorded separately in a studio. They don't use the version done on set; they lip sinc to themselves.

The singing was great. According to the IMDb fact page, JN sang at the re-creation of the Colgate Hour. Personally, I wouldn't be surprised either way. Yes, Dino had a terrific, unique sound, but because it was unique, I think a good, flexible singer could mimic it (as writers can mimic Ernest Hemmingway -- I think there's even an annual contest for that).

Anyway, I'm not a big listener of Martin (although I always enjoy him when I hear him), so I'm no expert. But to me, the singing sounded just a leeeettle different, making me think that JN (or someone else) was impersonating him. Then again, there's a good chance that, because I assumed it wouldn't be Dino's actual voice, my mind tricked me into thinking it sounded slightly different from him.

Singing aside, I think JN did a great job imitating his speaking voice. Man, Dino was one smooth cat!
