I think the show just made them up. The earth is clearly extremely old right now judging by the size of the sun, the condition the planet is in, and Lala Ru's age. So I can assume they made them up to convey not only how long it's been but how a longer existence is not always a happy one.

Yeah that's true. It's just like what that guy said in the Twilight Zone, I believe the episode is called Long Live Walter Jameson.
