Cute animals and violence aside, Dragon Ball has such an engrossing story and memorable characters. I watched it (and Z) for the first time a few years ago and it instantly became one of my favorite anime. Hamtaro, on the other hand, while fun, is too episodic and lacks enough of an overarching story for me to really say it's fantastic. From an objective standpoint, i'd say it's hard to argue Hamtaro being better than Dragon Ball. That doesn't mean that you can't like it more, because it's perfectly understandable to enjoy Hamtaro more than Dragon Ball.
I'd hardly call Pokemon a violent anime. Sure, it has monsters fighting, but throughout the series it's made very clear that Pokemon battle as friends for sport, and the episode where Ash's pokemon get stuck on an island with Team Rocket's pokemon, they all say that they have no dislike for each other and act like friends. So yeah, Pokemon fight as competition and not to hurt each other, making it as violent as a contact sport.
