Is it realistic how they all got into such great schools?

I was recently rewatching the series (finished last night) and it seemed kind of surprising that they all got into such great schools for college... Amy got into a bunch of Ivys, including Harvard, despite tanking her junior year and having a lower SAT score than I did. Hannah got into Notre Dame with a full scholarship and yet got rejected from Sarah Lawrence? Not like I ever applied to these schools (I'm Canadian, and here it doesn't take much to get into our top universities, so I don't have much of a frame of reference... I only applied to a few US schools and didn't really pursue the matter) but from what I understand, a full scholarship to Notre Dame would be pretty hard to achieve. Correct me if I'm wrong.

As for Ephram, is it possible to get into Juilliard based solely on your piano ability? I know a season 2 episode said that conservatories don't require SATs but did they completely overlook his mediocre (as mentioned several times) grades? Meanwhile Bright, who actually got pretty decent grades in his senior year couldn't get in anywhere. In Canada (Ontario at least) they only look at your grade 12 marks, and then only your top six courses.

It is VERY unrealistic. I know people who scored 4.0 their whole lives who couldn't get into Harvard. That's what shows do, though. The characters always get into the best schools. Maybe to encourage viewers to try, too? I don't know.

We're all stories, in the end. Just make it a good one, eh?

reply

Yeah, 4.0 don't guarantee you jack squat. The truth is, it's who you know.

"I said no camels, that's five camels, can't you count?"

reply

Yep. You probably need something higher than a 4.0. My classmate had about a 4.2, near perfect SATs, and she headed a bunch of clubs and played tennis.

no, it's to name drop and impress the viewer. see how speshhhul my characters are? shows like this unfortunately often have producers/writers fall in love with their characters and MarySue them.
to answer the thread question, yes, it was unrealistic and almost as annoying as Rory Gilmore getting into Harvard, Princeton and Yale.

In response to the question about Bright: my understanding is that schools look at overall GPA from all four years of high school. Three years of a C average cannot possibly be brought up in your final two semesters to something worthy of getting into a great school. Plus, you usually apply during first semester of Senior year to college; in Bright's case, this gives the schools no real academic recommendation to let him in. He hasn't received his better grades.

Didn't Amy get horrible grades her junior year? I don't understand how she got into Princeton.
