Why can't other monster movies be this intelligent?
A mystery wrapped around an adult-themed conspiracy and bio-genetics? If someone had explained that to me at first I probably wouldn't have been as interested in Patlabor 3, but after watching this masterpiece it only makes me wonder: what the heck happened to all other monster movies?
Looks like Pacific Rim might be a step in the right direction, but even compared to schlock like Transformers, Patlabor just blows the lid clean off the comparisons. I loved the use of various military and police divisions (in each of the movies, really) and while Transformers tries to tie-in realistic military attributes, the whole thing is so goofy and nonchalantly violent that it's hard to appreciate even some of the real noteworthy elements about the movie.
Such a shame that more monster movies can't be as smart as this film.
