Well, I'll give it a shot.

The main character is the daughter of a Belgian diplomat who was stationed in Tokyo years ago. Amelie was born in Japan and spent part of her childhood there.

As a result, she has fond memories and has idealized the country and culture in her mind.

As an adult, she returns to Japan to work in a large corporation as a translator.

What follows is a culture clash. Amelie is desperate to fit in. However, the more she tries, the more she alienates her superiors. She suffers a series of demotions, ending up as a bathroom attendant.

Yet Amelie is determined. She is on a one year contract. Her Japanese employers expect her to quit-- to behave in a typical "Western" way.

But Amelie knows that a true Japanese would stay and fulfill the employment contract for the specified time.

So despite the frequent humiliations, she does-- locked in a battle of wills and endurance with her immediate superior and the corporation in general.

Here is the crux or premise of the entire movie: Amelie considers Japan to be her true home, at least in spirit. Of course, her Japanese employers see her as a Western outsider-- someone who will never be accepted. By staying and quietly accepting her demeaning treatment, she is proving that she can be a true Japanese-- something that her employers are determined to disprove at all costs.

The movie then is basically about a culture clash, and a young woman's triumph over a corporation and culture that is determined to reject her.

I would also add there is an attraction by Amelie to her immediate superior. The superior is in some way threatened by Amelie, and enjoys the power she holds over her.

Over time, Amelie realizes that her superior is actually excited by her acts of submission, and begins to play to that side of her personality. There is a subtle undertone of eroticism to their relationship.
