Historical CSA question

In the opening scenes there is a CSA sailor who salutes the captain. His salute is a 'British Navy' style salute - ie. with palm facing outward, as opposed to the USN style salute which is palm facing down.

Does anyone know if this is historically accurate?

I don't care one way or another, I was just wondering.
