A competent sidekick

Finally, an adventure movie where the protagonist has a sidekick that is actually COMPETENT and can get things done, as well as provide comic relief.

Steve Zahn really brought it, didn't he? Always liked him, he's great.

reply

Absolutely. I really liked this film and I think Steve Zahn was one of the major contributing factors as to why. The camaraderie between his Al and McConaughey's Dirk was definitely one of the strengths of this film, kind of a shame they aren't going to make another one of these Dirk Pitt films with these 2 guys.

The star of the movie is Steve Zahn. I don't think he has a single line that is not a funny throwaway and practically every one of them had the theater I saw this at in stitches. He is a positive point to any movie he is in; most of the time he's the best thing about that movie.

reply

I enjoyed that as well!

Tough luck, chinless

reply

I agree. I think if it wasn't for Steve Zahn I wouldn't have enjoyed this all that much really.

reply

Me too

reply

That's one thing I really enjoyed about the movie. The sidekick was just as skilled (if not more skilled in some areas) as the "hero".

He wasn't some dorky fool who can't do anything except be funny, where we're left wondering why the main character keeps him around in the first place.

He wasn't some dorky fool who can't do anything except be funny ...
Yes, he's the one who managed to shut down the bomb, while Dirk chases the doctor.🐭

reply

"Hi, how are you?"

reply

In the books, i'd say Al is actually more competent than Dirk is.

"I said no camels, that's five camels, can't you count?"

reply

Helped that they have Rainn Wilson for some of the action to act as the helpless one.
