I don't get it...

There are loads of movies out there with very basic plots and ridiculous action sequences and I find them real yawn fests. I just can't stand them.

But Sahara, I dunno, I find it so much fun. I really REALLY enjoy it.

Personally, I think it's the chemistry between Dirk and Al and add a great support cast. I think despite the paper thin plot and totally over-the top action the cast draw me into the story and THAT allows me to suspend disbelief.

Any others with me?

Years ago when i tried to watch it, i had to turn it off within like 10 minutes cuz I thought the characters and plot setup were just too unlikeable. I suppose I'll give it another go soon, but it's tough watching MM at the peek of him being so full of himself. Same is true for Clooney in his respective films.

So... did you end up re-watching it?

I watched it last night with my son and we decided it kind of has a modern day Indiana Jones vibe to it. Plus it has a pretty great cast -- nearly every major role has a decent actor doing as good of a job as can be done with the material they had. Bonus points for Lennie James as the dictator, he's a great actor and they could have thrown that role at any number of throwaway American actors who wouldn't have been able to manage the part.

I watched it three times last week, since it surprised me so much on the first rewatch. I absolutely love this movie. It's a pretty perfect action adventure film. Bright and gorgeous, exotic locations, very macho, lots of action set pieces, all distinct and different, good humor, good camaraderie, a very satisfying and climatic finish, and a wonderful happy ending. This movie is just everything it should be. Arguably one of the best speedboat chases ever put to film as well. A real lively jamming soundtrack. It's just a fun ride start to finish. The characters are all useful too, even the damsel in distress. There's no baggage in this flick.

Saw it in the theater. Didn't care for it. Rewatched it on Netflix last week. Pretty good. Yeah kind of a cross between raiders and national treasure and top gun (Well, maybe not Topgun ha ha) (MM is a little much sometimes (in any movie). Steve Zahn is fantastic! One of the most underrated underutilized comic relief actor! And Penelope, well I just don't get the big deal at all.
