What makes this movie bad?

What are some of the reasons this movie got such low ratings? Anything in particular or did (those of) you (who don't like it) just dislike it overall?

I really enjoyed this movie but it seems like I'm in the minority and I'm curious about the other side of the debate. I looked through the other threads and it seems like just a general dislike.

P.S. I'm not familiar with the books.

I am familiar with the books. Loved this one in particular. I think the reason it has such a low rating is because people cannot differentiate between the book and the movie. They wanted an exact replica. That was never going to happen, but they were able to capture the spirit of the book. The credit sequence is particularly cool if you're a fan of the books because of all of the references to the series.

So basically what you're saying is... I should go read the book(s). I'm okay with that!

My recommendation is if you read the books, stop once his kids are introduced. While the books immediately preceding this were far from top notch, they take a dramatic turn for the worse starting with Trojan Odyssey.

You're absolutely right. What the kids are introduced the books instantly go downhill. Even in the explanation for the kids' existence stretches the imagination trifle too far.

That score wasn't patriotic- it was bombastic. There's a difference.

reply

well it wasnt triptastic as in some older & newer prods that's fosho.

I have been a fan of the books since I first read "Raise the Titanic" back in the late 70's. Where this is a good movie action and story. My problem was M.M. wasn't the picture of Dirk Pitt that I had in my mind and was distracting if nothing else. Over all I Liked the movie and would watch it again.

There is more Gravy about you then the Grave. Scrooge.

The score reminded me a LOT of a classic John Barry Bond score, with the blaring trumpets during the action scenes. I'm certain that was a conscious decision too, seeing the similarities between this film and the Bond films.

reply

Yeah, I'm with you Volante-3, I found the score to be very James Bond-esque. And the bits that weren't had african vocal type music in it, unless that's what Uberlim meant by 'patriotic.' The only other music in the soundtrack are the rock songs like Magic Carpet Ride and Sweet Home Alabama, which are american (I think) but aren't exactly what I would deem 'patriotic' music.

reply

Well, I can only tell you what I didn't like about it, and it has nothing to do with the book, which I didn't read.

a) Steve Zahns comic relief character, as well as most of the humor, didn't work for me.
b) I found some of the action, especially the boat chase, badly edited. Sometimes there were as much as 5 cuts within one second.
c) I thought it was insulting that the contaminated water was about to reach the ocean, like the audience wouldn't care if it would just be all the people in Africa getting sick.
d) Too much of the plot depended on lucky coincidences. Dirk saving Eve at the beginning of the movie, Dirk and Al finding camels in front of the house after their boat was destroyed, them finding and rescuing Eva when she's stuck in the well, the soccer ball that jumps into a hole where they then find the cave painting, and finally and most annoyingly the dynamite which explodes in the exact same spot where the ship is. The desert is freakin' huge, dude. Come on.

Hope this helps?!

Nothing you said here "helps" because it's totally ridiculous.

This movie is the fourth worst financial disaster in Hollywood history. (literally)

- but I don't understand why. I loved it, and I normally don't even like this time of broad adventure flick.

reply

Nonsense !! That's hogwash.

reply

Well, no, it's a historical fact.

reply

Considering the film has made $120M worldwide, on a budget of $130M, I find it ridiculous to suggest Sahara is the "fourth worst financial disaster in Hollywood history."

You need to read up on your Hollywood disasters.

reply

A movie needs to earn twice its budget because they spent money on marketing to. If a movie does not make at least twice its budget back then it is said to be a fiasco.

reply

It was unconvincing. Acting, dialogue, action scenes...not to mention history. there's no way that casemate ironclad would manage to cross the atlantic on it's own.

I don't think it is bad, not as a movie. It is a good no-brainer adventure movie. The action scenes are really good, fun, technically good, well motivated as part of the story, do not look like computer games, and do not indefinitely extend until they get horribly dull like some action movies do. Pretty good casting too.

Weakest part of the movie: Penélope Cruz' too obvious plastic surgery. I can hardly watch her, fearing that her fake lips will fall off any time.

But I have not read the book, and I know how you can hate a movie when it spoils a book, wastes the opportunity to tell a great story. I hate "I robot" as a rendition of the book, but I like it as a Judge Dredd movie with some Tron on the top.
