Can anyone capable at lip-reading tell us what Kevin and the various priests and Margaret's father are saying in the post-rape scene with the ceílí band playing reels?
Presumably Kevin is lying and saying that it was consensual and/or he was seduced by her.
I'm not a lip-reader, but based on the historically context, one of two things happened: A) What you said. B) They believed her but it didn't matter to them because sex outside of marriage was considered a sin, even if it was rape.
