In the scene where she is dying, she begins telling bernadette how she got pregnant when she was young,and was put into the asylum. She says "My mother told me not to go near the soldiers." Were they trying to imply that she was raped? or did she willingly have sex?
shareShe was a simple mind, she was easly fooled and convinced by others, I think she willingly would have sex with a man if she was asked.
shareI think we're supposed to accept that it doesn't matter, because in this case there is little difference between rape and consensual sex. As in, the soldiers or sailors probably didn't treat their random women very well and so there would be a fine line between consent and coercion; also, it would be all the same to the woman's family. Margaret, after all, was sent to the convent after being raped, just as if she'd chosen to have sex.
