Not a funny movie at all but it had the funniest thing I had ever seen.

When the Bernadette and Rose/Patricia were trying to leave at the ennd and they decide to get the $$$ from Sister Bridgett's office and get caught. THey get away and run out of the room down the hall.

Sister Bridgett and another nun emerge from the office and off camera we hear a squeal and the Nuns run back into the office. Bernadette runs back and grabs a huge Candlestick from the table in the hall and run back to the door with it to the door and starts banging on the door with it. All the while screaming "you stay in there!"

That was the funniest thing I had ever seen when I had first seen this movie.

You're laborers, you're supposed to be laboring! That's what you get for not having an education!!

LOL that was the funniest scene for me too!

I remember when I saw this film in a sold-out cinema. When this scene happened, the whole theater started laughing and clapping. Everybody went nuts! It seemed as if everyone was happy to have this kind of relief after seeing all the awful things the girls went through. Great movie!

reply

Exactly. I couldn't help but crack up, and I am of the belief that this is what the writers and director wanted. Yes, it was insane what went on inside that place, but while an outsider would have looked upon that and thought the girls to be insane, it was actually the most sane thing that Bernadette could have done.

I'd like the escape scene to have had a touch of Tarantino, with the vengeful Rose driving the big key into the head nun's eye, and the fat nun receiving a goodly wallop of the heavy candlestick on her head, complete with sickening wet thudding sound!

reply

It WAS funny, but I thought the itchy priest was even funnier.

I don’t think they were trying to get the money. They were looking for the main key they needed to get out, and were discovered by Sister Bridget. When Bernadette and Bridget reach a physical deadlock over the key, Rose/Patricia retrieves the missing safe key that she had found but not mentioned earlier in the film, as a bargaining chip. Sister Bridget was frantically searching for the key earlier, and would have probably got into a lot of trouble if the safe could not be opened, so Rose/Patricia knew she had something she could use to help them escape.

It was actually an amazing scene, tragic yet funny, almost a sort of catharsis, poetic justice, relieving the accumulated tension, a fitting way to end the convent workhouse experience. I had the same reaction as the OP, I thought it was funny, but funny in a realistic sort of way, like when something happens in real life that is shocking on the surface, but unintentionally humorous.

I love that bit too and cheer her on!

I know it's awful but Crispina's face at the end makes me laugh when she's in the mental institute. And now, because I know I shouldn't laugh at it, because it's so sad, I always do"

reply

They should have taken up a candlestick way before.

reply

right you are Padawan, I mean Pattokun. They didn't give two loafs abut the money, they just wanted OUT.

reply

To correct your error... They did NOT go to the office to obtain the money. They went there to get the key to the front door and the gate to allow them to leave.

They should have taken both.

What if a squirrel wants a sausage?

reply

I agree. That convent got the money off their labor obtained through corruption and abuse. They should have taken that risk.

The Fabio Principle: Puffy shirts look best on men who look even better without them.

reply

No, they shouldn't have. If they'd taken the money, the nuns could have had them arrested for stealing, and they would likely have spent the rest of their lives in prison. By escaping only, they had the chance to stay out for good. Even if the nuns tried to come after them, it would have been unlikely that anyone could have forced them to return.

reply

I agree! I cheered during that whole escape scene.
