I just thought to watch this ep a day early due to nothing good on TV and discovered that there's an error on the episode menu of this DVD in the set.

The link to this ep goes to episode 5: Symbiosis and the link marked for that goes to this one, episode 4: Time Out of Mind.

Also check out the "DVD Goofs" thread a couple down from here.

Just a heads up.

Thanks for the info. Plan on watching it later tonight.......

reply

Indeed, and I fell for it. I watched 13 minutes of Symbiosis until I realized I was watching the wrong episode. Agent Stone, the names in those video files have been switched!

reply

Yep I watched it as well. It happens...on the bright side...next weeks episode looks pretty good.

Great episode. Very interesting concepts, both of them: Kurt's way to make millions, and the memory loss thing. And I loved that we had lots of Kurt time in the story.

So, would you marry Beyonce if you could meet her before she became famous? Well, Kurt tried, and again he learned that the future is not so easy to manipulate. Not only did he discovered that simply it wasn't time for SATR to become a new musical craze yet, but also his mask fell off in the last minute, and Karen realizd she was married to a man who didn't love her. I guess he put up with her as much as he could, but enough is enough! And it seems that a new discovery, be it a new musical style, or Facebook, or whatever, has to be done by the right person at the very right time, not sooner, not later.

The memory loss storyline was also engaging. One by one the Odyssey crew members were out of their mission, until there was just Kurt. That makes it evident how fragile their situation is when all they can count on to stop the destruction of the Earth is their flawed human memories. At least Kurt had the forethought to write himself a note and record himself a video keeping a more solid record of their mission. I loved the way the whole situation developed.

It was also interesting how the show made fun of itself, in Kurt and Chuck's sci-fi pseudonovel "Odyssey 5", trashing its own sci-fi premises. According to their snobbish consultant, time travel is absurd, they should lose the Seeker completely, synthetics in human shape is just a cheap television excuse to save money in makeup, and, the best of all, a shuttle in low orbit would've never survived intact to the destruction of the planet. I think this has even been mentioned in one of the comments we wrote about the pilot.

I just wish I had seen how Kurt managed to get four strangers (his forgetful Odyssey friends) to the midi file that restored their memories. But I guess that would've been a whole new episode.

All in all, an excellent episode. I give it a 9 in the Odyssey scale.

I just wish I had seen how Kurt got the other

I've given that some thought myself. Best I can come up with is:
Chuck would be hard to get to, but a guy like Kurt could probably get to Neil through his vices. Then Neil could easily get to his dad. Then Chuck is somebody both of the ladies recognize and trust even without their memories of the mission.

So really, all Kurt would have to do would be to get the midi to Neil with a reason to open it in his (or any other) computer and his part would be done. And that would also leave him in a position to get pranked by the others at the end like they did.

Probably not exactly how the writer would have done it, but it's all I can dream up that would work.

I think you've explained it very neatly. Thanks!

Cool display of problem solving at it's finest. For some reason it would be the brilliant amoralist who would do such things as leave notes and videos to himself to pull himself out of it. At least he knew it was somebody he trusted giving him information only a mad man would believe from anyone else.

Bet Chuck got a good earful of "I told you so!" from Paige when Neil crashed the bike and got arrested.

I liked the way when Chuck noticed that Neil had lost his memory of the mission he changed and left the boy in Jail to learn the lesson he probably didn't remember anymore. And how long are they really gonna hold a teenager who thought he was Evel Knievel and wrecked his motorbike jumping a pile of junk? (Actually, he made the jump. It's when he let go of the handlebars to do a victory gesture that he lost control of it.)

Will Kurt never learn how that sort of behavior with his future memories always backfires on him? Probably not. I guess the gangsta thug's problem with Chuck must have been based on jealousy and gone away when he got the girl. She could probably convince him to leave the ex alone as long as she's with him instead.

Agreed about the show making fun of itself. At least the guest character they got to pan the show's concepts was an arrogant ass.

I'll give it a 7.

Interesting point, about the "gangsta thug" and his possible problem with Kurt. Though it's clear this storylihne is closed and we'll probably never hear of Kareena again, that would explain well why Kurt wouldn't be bothered in the future. And when will Kurt learn. I hope never. I like Kurt because of his human flaws. Don't change, Kurt!

reply

Well I'm a little indifferent about this episode, not one of my favorites. The whole memory loss thing seemed a little out of place to me. It was ok but after last weeks episode it didn't really seem to build upon it any. I did like to see Kurt up to his old tricks again trying to beat the clock on the music scene. It seemed a little ex stream to marry the girl though.
We knew that Sara's second husband would show eventually and so he has, there will surely be many more side stories concerning this. We did get the random boob shot in this week, so far I think that is 3 out of 4 epps, hope they keep going.
I agree with Mad about the self ripping of the show it was pretty funny and I did like that part. Actually that was my favorite part.
All in all it was likable but not great, I give it a 6 on the 05 scale.

Glad you remembered to mention Sarah's future husband, Troy. Yes, that should hold major developments in the future. Another one was Angela and her corrupt father, starting a smear campaign agains his political opponent. It's interesting to see how that will turn out.

reply

Yeah forgot about that. That was interesting. For some reason I thought that was in the part of the next episode I watched. Yeah she really has daddy issues and her mom was kind of weird too. I wonder if her dad is going to entertain thoughts of offing her.

This Friday on Odyssey 5 epp 04: Time Out of Mind
Second time around did it first thing this morning but something must of happened and it didn’t take. Oh well here I go again this one’s all about Kurt a most unlikely hero. I would of never of guessed that Kurt would save the day. I would more expect him to be happy the others loss of memory and he could go back to his womanizing and gambling to make a living. But no he decides to do a video journal in preparation for his own memory loss. Good job Kurt for being proactive on these things. Kurt was of course back on his game trying to take advantage of the young ladies talent. But as always it didn’t work as he planned and the whole thing fell apart. Well at least he gave the young lady the idea of being a pop star who knows if he hadn’t done what he did with the lady she might not even tried to be diva music star.

The Science Fiction writer brought a little comic relief to this episode making fun of Showtimes story line. I enjoyed this part the most of all. This one so far has been my least favorite but every episode can’t be a winner. I going to give this one a six on the O5 scale……………

Interesting point. How did Kurt's interference influence the girl to become a diva? He could have been the main responsible for her becoming so, but let's not forget she did become a diva in the first place without Kurt's interference. How would have things played out this time? Things to consider...

It's curious how we got different views on this episode. It is one of my favorite ones.

It's curious how we got different views on this episode.

I've been doing this for years now and one thing I can guarantee, it will happen at least once every show.
I think I was somewhat thrown off by watching about 14 minutes of the other episode and then reloading to this one. I found the other more interesting and was kind of wondering about that little girl the whole time i was watching this episode.

Again, different views. I found next episode promising, but this one better.

Well I don't think anyone will be accusing you and me of thinking exactly the same when it comes to liking or dis liking a show :)

Yeah, which they might have suspected after you and I gave identical grades to a couple episodes.

Yeah...that was starting to creep me out as well...thought the sentients might have gotten to you.
