I really liked this episode and enjoyed it very much even after not having resisted and having read your reviews full of spoilers. Perhaps the best episode so far.
So we had one more episode of Odyssey 4. Yes, 4, because Angela is nowhere to be seen. Are they trying to prove she's pointless to the story? Was Tamara making a movie back in 2002? Anyway I'm starting to get used to her constant absence because after her story with Kurt seemed fully developed, she seemed to have little more to do. The only thing that still saves her is whatever happens between her and her father. I think more was supposed to come out of that.
I knew what was happening to Chuck Taggart from the get-go: he was turning into Robocop! The transformation itself was something I already expected (and I think I even said something about it) when, in the first or second episode, they were controling patients of a genetic test and making them do things, like kill Ed Scrivens. Now it all makes sense. I'm glad to get some answers for a change, instead of just more questions.
The transformation back, however, was just too quickly and uneventful and I wish there had been more emotion in it, with something unexpected happening, but then they just have 48 minutes for an episode and it was time to wrap up the story. And we all know Chuck wouldn't stay a synthetic. That's the problem with putting the main character's life in jeopardy; it's hardly ever a real danger, just an adventure.
The NASA director saying to Mark that Chuck has big shoes: what, is he a clown now? Sideshow Bob? I think I might be the only one to find humor in some current American expressions everybody else is used to. Seriously now, Mark finally found a way of being useful: spying on his dad. But he's stabbing him on the back out of love - he simply won't accept the possibility of disappointing his dad, even it that costs the old man's career. Way to go, son!
I just didn't understand why Mark simply wouldn't quit when his father himself said he didn't want to be an astronaut. But then I thought a father/son relationship is always complicated and years of expectations for the "golden boy" have proven to be too much for him to handle. And I finally got my answer when his mother said, "Never let me down." That was a punch in the gut!
And I'm also starting to worry about Neil. Will he find enough time to study for the astronaut program if he's always so busy on missions to fight synths and save the world from blowing up? At least Neil's dedication in the end was rewarded, and Kurt recognized that.
I'm enjoying Sarah's drama playing itself out. Even though it previously seemed annoying and worn-out, this time I followed the events with interest with all the court procedures. I just don't understand why she's still give what's-his-name guy (the new news director) such a cold shoulder, when we know it and she knows it she's bond to end with him anyway, and he'll stand by her no matter what. And won't the kid get real sick already and end Sarah's present predicament? The way things are going so slow it looks like the brat is going to be healthy forever. How long does it take for cancer to manifest itself?
I was starting to think Chuck's wife was an annoying character, one of those that do what they are supposed to do in the real world, but we wish them to be dead, because they totally don't get they live in a sci-fi universe. Usually nagging women in the path of a hero's journey fall into that category. But then by the end of the episode she was readier to accept Chuck's fantastic time-traveling story (in other words, see the obvious which we already know to be true), so I still think there's hope for her.
And finally Kurt, oh my dear Kurt, you never cease to amaze me, and this is why you're my favorite character. After getting attached to the deaf girl, and having had a hypothetical fast-growing baby with Angela, he's developed his parenting skills, and now is fathering a synth foetus of his own. Wasn't that a sweet, touching moment? It's heart-warming family moments like this that science fiction needs more of! Go Kurt! Let your synth baby grow and be strong and bring us a lot of interesting plot twists!
All in all a great episode. I give this one a 9 in the Odyssey scale.
