how exactly did they do it in one shot?

i've never seen russian ark, but im fascinated by the one-shot thing. so how did they accomplish that? i mean, did it just follow one person throughout the whole movie, there must of been some transitions or something, how did they do it?

reply

Not 100% certain, but at a guess...

They just spent most of the pre-production time getting all the blocking, staging, costumes, choreography et alia down-down-down to letter-perfect military precision and had an army of production and staging managers and handlers.

Production day, everyone staged and ready to go, three-two-one, WE'RE ROLLING!

"Russian Ark" wasn't just a stroke of brilliance, it had to be the single most triumphant film I've ever seen. I stand in unabashed awe of the entire cast and production crew. I unreservedly encourage EVERYONE, and I do mean "everyone," to see it at least once.

TRUST THE TOAD!!

The plan and filming was covered in a rather long clip included on the DVD, which was almost as interesting as the film itself.... I watched this explanation after I watched "The Russian Ark" itself and wonder if I should have reversed this....

"Trees and stones will teach you that which you can never learn from masters."

Yeah, "Film in a Breath" - not only showed how the movie was made, but served as a guide in understanding what the movie was saying. I would definitely recommend watching it after the movie (though perhaps re-watching the movie afterwards).

Yes did exactly that.... I was watching more for 'flaws' after that thought. Do not think I noticed anything except perhaps an expression during the "Persian" scene....

im pretty sure it was just edited to look like one take...ive only watched some of the film but i certainly noticed at least 1 match edit in there.

reply

It was one take! Understand?

reply

Can you give a time so I can fast-forward my player and see the match edit for myself?

(Freeze-frame usually uncovers any attempt at hiding something. But as I haven't got the patience to freeze-frame the entire film, I need to know where to look.)

Note that "no cuts" doesn't mean either "no manipulations" or "no tropes". There were over 30,000 (!) digital manipulations. And many tropes that look like an edit can in fact also be shot in one take given sufficent planning and care. (It's probably more difficult to do them the one-take way than the usual way though.)
