Help! Confused about who lives where!

Does Valmont have a house or apartment? Does he have rooms in the house of Madame de Merteuil? Can he get in and out of her place at will? What does the flashing light on the wall of her bedroom signify? I am so confused about some of these details. Can anyone explain? thanks!
