in the beginning when they crash into the water they were down there for probably over 2 minutes and when they got out they still had their wet clothes on. That water had ice on top of it. how did they seriously not go into shock and die?
"Just because the guys got a library card doesn't make him Yoda"
Because it's a movie. The cold is supposed to reflect the emotional content of the scene (being robbed; their best friend killed). Just think how different that scene would feel if it was the middle of summer and everyone was wearing T-shirts...
That is lame though. Making an unrealistic scene for the purpose of using symbolism. To me personally I think that is pretty poor on the director to make that call.

Dude! All scenes are unrealistic -- it's just a question of what you're willing to swallow, or what you're ignorant about and won't catch. Preferably you're caught up in the emotion of what's happening and not thinking about the details.
umm too bad I am. You ever hear of this city called Baltimore? It's located in Maryland. They have this thing called the "Polar Bear Plunge" where people dive into the Chesapeke Bay in frigid conditions. And they have medical staff on hand and determine if it's safe or not. Last time it wasn't after the first plunge. So maybe you should stfu cause I doubt they would of survived. Even on Man vs. Wild they say to take off your clothes and they did not do so. Kthxbye "Just because the guys got a library card doesn't make him Yoda"
LMAO. Baltimore cold? Your winters are warmer than our summers. Our Polar Bear Club has to use a chainsaw to cut through 2ft of ice so they can jump in. The internet is full of useful knowledge. You should learn how to access it.

I don't believe they were in the water more than 5min. This was a freshwater reservoir. Therefore, water temp. below the ice is usually 4°C or, 39.2°F.
you're missing the point. I'm not saying that they should have died IN the water. I'm saying they should of died OUT of it. There is no way that they could survive in those freezing cold conditions after coming out of the water with their clothes soaked head to toe IN THE MIDDLE OF NOWHERE. But whatever. Try it for yourself. I'll be looking forward to tuning into your death on 1000 ways to die. "Just because the guys got a library card doesn't make him Yoda"
You couldn't see their breath in none of those scenes. It could have been 40°-50° that day.
But whatever. Try it for yourself.
Already have. I fell through the ice crossing a beaver pond while deer hunting. Couldn't touch bottom and had to break ice before I could get out. I was in the water for about 3min. The air temp. that day was -10°F and I had to walk 1.5mi. back to the shack. By the time I got back, the outer layers were completely froze solid. Yes, I was cold. And yes, it took the rest of the day, sitting in front of the heater, to feel normal again. But still, no frostbite, nothing. Like I said before, pussies like you that live in the tropics might not be able to handle a little cold. But the rest of us considered what they did in the movie child's play.
nice geography bud. cause Baltimore is in the tropics. maybe you stayed in the water a bit too long "Just because the guys got a library card doesn't make him Yoda"
I also liked that the water was as clear as a swimming pool. Ah but yes it's just a movie (always amused by such comments made on a movie discussion forum). Pointing out the "goofs" is half the fun.
Unrealistic is still unrealistic when their is symbolism or not. I noticed it enough to detract me from the continuity of the movie and I think that is a mistake.
Guns kill people, just like Spoons made Rosie O'Donnell fat.
No, most of the ones I watch are more realistic. That's the point and the only reason for the comment. Scripts must be believable unless they are strictly fantasy which you seem to prefer.
Having ice on the water isn't the main indicator of its temperature. I grew up in Yellowknife and I still remember that it takes about FOUR minutes to die of hypothermia in the coldest northern waters and these guys (it's been a long time since I saw the movie so I may be wrong here) weren't anywhere near the Arctic Circle.
1- Baltimore is "tropics" (obviously used in a sarcastic sense) where the average winter temperature is +23F.
2- The average temperature in Italy doesn't even go bellow +34F. And though they were obviously in the mountains, they would still be in close range to warm weather.
3- It takes literally hours to actually die from hypothermia.
These, by the way, are not just random facts spouted off. I live in northern Canada where the temperature in the middle of winter can be around -40F. I work out on the water and frozen lakes and have taken outdoor winter survival courses. On several occasions I have fallen though, and yes, it sucks... a lot... however if you know how to properly handle the situation it can be survivable. I have also recreationally gone through frozen water in non-protective clothing, and obviously survived. I also HAVE had hypothermia on three seperate occasions, and it took several hours in severe conditions to get that far. The characters on the movie are obviously intelligent and would have known how to handle the situation.
QED; definately a crappy, but survivable situation.
Yes, not to mention that the guy making the complaint was assuming all sorts of facts not in evidence, like time invovled, distance to shelter, to heat,tc dry clothes, etc.
That was the most pointless discussion I've ever seen, even though the one guy was right about the effects of temperature, hypothermia, etc. He could've just said "You don't know what the temp in the water was, what the temp in the air was, how much time was involved in the water, how much time before they reached heat, shelter, dry clothes, etc."
The movie had many unrealistic elements, but this was the hardest for me to believe most of all.
I saw this show where they made a soldier dive in freezing water and he lasted more than a half hour in it. But he was especially trained to endure these kinds of conditions. I find it hard to believe that 4 average joes would survive that kind of cold.
However, I live in a warm climate so I wouldn't know.
---------------------------- WHAT THE FVCK IS A BIEBER????
I always wondered the same thing, it was literally freezing, maybe they got out of the water and started a fire to warm up, but yeah, they should have AT LEAST gotten some serious frostbite.
---------------------------- WHAT THE FVCK IS A BIEBER????
I found the most unrealistic part of the movie to be that Steve and the thugs only hung around for like 10 seconds and then left. They should have obviously hung around a lot longer to make sure that all five of them were dead, not just Bridger. Bridger´s body went floating up to the surface of the water, but the others didn´t. How did they know that the others were dead? They didn´t and of course they weren´t. They should have stayed around a lot longer to be sure that they were all dead.
I would think most people would want to get the hell out of there seeing how they thought they had murdered them all. You could never tell when some pesky motorist might come along or worse a cop.
They are in the middle of nowhere, and they can see a motorist, or worse a cop, coming from far away. In that case they shoot the motorist or cop also. These guys are no pussy's.
