funny, until they make fun of the Holocaust

I am Jewish and saw this movie, i know they were a lot of cruel jokes, but I just laughed at them. Until there was this scene when they are on the ride and they pass by this nazi saying"off to the showers with you". I dont know about all of you, but I think that might go a little bit to overboard with that.

The greatest thing you'll ever learn is just to love and be loved in return.

I'm not Jewish and I even thought that was sick.

I agree. I'm a jew too and I realized that it was ment to be a joke. I mean come on, you were laughing your butt off when the hebrew hammer kicked the snot out of all those skinheads.

reply

its clear that is a joke
but it doesnt make it any less wrong....
but here we make hollocaust jokes alot so it doesnt really bother me (ah the youth of Israel such a sophisticated ppl joking about theyre brutally killed granfather/mothers)

reply

It was a nazi saying that. It's making fun of the nazi more than anything, because of the ridiculousness of such an evil thing to say. Part of the fun of the movie is the fact that nothing is sacred, everything is outrageous and over-the-top stereotypes.
Oh, I laughed really hard when they said "make some more award-winning Holocaust movies" toward the beginning.

reply

its funny b/c its a Jew saying it to a Nazi, so DEAL WITH IT

reply

it was a joke made by someone jewish.
it's called "dark humor" and laughter is a way of dealing.
so instead of being all sad, we make fun of ourselves :]
i'm jewish, my great grandma's family was killed in the holocaust and that's terrible, but there are a lot of jewish comidians and jewish people genraly that laugh about it, cause laughing is a way of dealing.
[sorry if i have writing mistakes, i'm from Israel].

It isn't a Holocaust joke, the ride was the ride of America or whatever it's called with the 4 score and seven years ago(they used Moses instead of Lincoln). It was the history of jews and part of that history UNFORTUNATELY INCLUDES THE HOLOCAUST. Unless you're trying to claim it didn't happen, then why complain? The history ride can't have that piece of history because it's bad? Grow up.

The reason that was funny because it showed how the jews will laugh at themselves, even over the Holocaust. that was the point of the joke.

Comedy=tragedy+time
for example in Mel Brooks' the History of the World Part I:
The inquistion is made fun of, and it is hilarious. The Holocaust may take a little longer, but it will be the butt of jokes.
Also see: any Mel Brooks movie

I would have to disagree with most of the people on this board about us all laughing about the Holocaust. I didn't find that joke offensive, becuase it was just part of the ride. It wasn't really a joke. However, I don't think anyone is actually laughing about the Holocaust. People may be ready to move on and accept it, but show me a comedian who actually sits there and chuckles about the Holocaust.

I'm not trying to sound abrasive or anything, I just wanted to put in that the majority of America probably isn't ready to laugh at this event.

I know a bunch of people will come on saying I am too serious and can't take a joke, but I am not saying that scene wasn't funny. It was, and it is a huge part of Jewish history. But I can't think of much up front Holocaust humor, other than The Producers.

Oh, and in case I don't see ya, good afternoon, good evening, and good night!

You guys missed the point. The holocaust thing wasn't a joke in itself; it was merely part of the larger joke of the scene. It was the set-up.

Jews being enslaved by Egyptians: they laugh
The Holocaust: they laugh
A Jewish woman having her credit card declined: they appear somber and offended

The joke is how they can laugh at themselves when it comes to truly terrible things while at the same time they can be so neurotic, preoccupied with and upset about the minor inconveniences of life.

It's funny how people just go straight to "OFFENDED" when a joke is even tangentially related to a tragedy without considering the actual content, intent and execution of the joke.

The general principle of tasteless humor is that you had better make sure the joke is funny, because if it isn't, you are more bound to notice the ugliness of the subject matter.

For example, is it possible to make a tasteful joke about 9/11? Shortly after 9/11, The Onion ran an article saying that the hijackers are surprised to find themselves in Hell. Now that's funny, and we're able to laugh at the joke without feeling unclean.

The Holocaust joke in Hebrew Hammer was simply not funny enough to overcome the taste barrier. It was only a brief moment in the film and didn't matter a whole lot, but it still didn't work.

Life is pretty rough sometimes. Maybe you should by a helmet?

If you have nothing better to do than be offended because a clearly pro Jewish movie made a holocaust joke maybe you should grow up? The holocaust happened, everybody knows its a tragedy, learning to laugh at stuff like this is one of the best ways to disarm how terrible it was and take away its power.
