80's setting not impressive

I saw this show twice, I actually like it, it's funny that Joel comes up with all these stories and things from the future and he's quite hot, although is some years younger than me. But, It's supposed to be set in 1981?? I don't see that anywhere in the show. Or I might not have watched it too often yet. I don't hear any popular music from that year and don't see it in the clothing style, except maybe for Pat's hairdo. Does anybody have the same opinion or an explanation?

Firstly, the popular music from the 1980s has been removed for the 'syndicated' version of the show (due to legal obligations). Therefore, the hits of the day can't be heard on the show unless you saw the original broadcast episodes.

Secondly, there are various pieces of '80s culture strewn throughout the show, including music, television and social events of the time. Fashion wise, Joel is constantly making reference to his 'parachute pants', Isobelle often wears 'puffball' clothing, etc. Loads of references to be found if you look hard enough...

I think you have to take these 'retro' shows with a grain of salt - obviously you can't recreate a decade down to the last detail, but I think the show does a generally decent job at recreating 1981.

Thanks snowblower, I think I have to watch the show a couple more times. The reason I was stating my comment was because I'm from '81 myself.
