My own opinion of Joels Journey 2nd time around

Okay so its true that in 2002, Joel got zapped by his sister Cheryl with Electric Irons and got sent back to the year 1981 21 years earlier with his 34 year old personality and a mind of a 34 year old. Joel can't return to the future and this TV Show is similar to Back To The Future movies only Adult Joel of 34 years old returns on the baseball field as 14 year old Joel.

Plus he gets a second chance with future knowledge to change things. The only actor from Back To the Future in this show is Tom Wilson who plays the coach who was known as Biff and Griff and Buford Tannen in those movies.

What Joel wants to do in his second chance is get his parents to not divorce when getting to college and help his best friend Patrick get ahead for himself and not get Cheryl in an institution later on and not end up just as a Paper Salesman and Single like last time and he knows so much that happens between 1980 and 2002 that he will invest in stocks that are sure to jump up and also use his future knowledge for a better career.

Most of all what is happening in the future years is he knows what attractive Holly Kemp likes alot and he will impress her so much that they will fall in love and get married and Joel will find another friend of his that will care for Isabel and as for Patrick his best friend who is the only one that Joel can share future things with, he will fix him up with that girl he went to the dance with that loves Laura Ingals and Little House on the Praire.

I think that Joel will use his future knowledge to get a good degree and will invest in A T & T and Verizon and probably be an Internet Programmer in knowing things and yes become fairly wealthy along with Patrick and the Little House girl and also he and Holly will have a married and happy life too plus Joel may know as soon as hes over 21 what some of the winning lottery numbers are too. Plus with his TV and movie knowledge he can win tons of bets easily too.

None of that will happen (and not just because the show was cancelled) since Joel wasn't actually sent back to the 80s--he was zapped in the present and was "dreaming" the entire thing. This was a problem I had with the show from the beginning--why show someone "fixing" his life when it can have little effect in the present? They made no attempt to say the changes were real, nor did they have any plausible way of getting out of the situation and showing that the plot of the series was going to be meaningful in Joel's adult life.

well the main problem is that if he changes everything then in the future things may have changed to such an extent that his sister no longer zaps him, renderring it impossible for him to go back in time, menaing all that he has just done over the past 21 years cannot have happened, but if none of this happened then that would mena things would be as they were first tiome round and his sister would zap him and he would go back, but then when he chnaged everything it would mena he couldn't be zapped...lol although this is a problem they'd never have encountered unless they ran the show for like 40 seasons

One of the MAIN problems is that he went from being 34 in 2002 to 14 in 1980, that is mathmatically impossible!! I take it the writters couldn't do basic math or they were to stoned when the wrote the show.

I think one of the main problems is IT'S FICTION AN YOU GUYS ARE OVER ANALYSING!!

Just a thought.

He's 36 in 2002. He goes back to 1981. Now do the math.

I know you probably won't answer, since you wrote this six years ago :) ... but how do you know that? It's fiction (which means it doesn't have to be realistic) - maybe in that world, they could be sent back in time by electroshock.

They made no attempt to say the changes were real, nor did they have any plausible way of getting out of the situation and showing that the plot of the series was going to be meaningful in Joel's adult life.

What do you mean here, exactly? As I saw it, it was very clear that everything he did affected his present life, and thereby also his future life.

Anyway, one of the best shows I've seen in quite a long time. The characters are really interesting, and it makes one think about life, at the same time that it's a hilarious 80s spoof :)

Plus, if he was zapped into the present and was "dreaming" the entire thing, how would you explain his knowledge for future events?
Such as:
- Wearing a Ghostbuster's costume to a halloween party in 1981.
- Using Green Days "Time Of Your Life" in a school talent show.
- Joel attempting to crack jokes using multiple references from the late 90s, to which his friends cannot relate to.
- Joel and Pat's constant efforts to prevent certain future events from occuring, while not always succeeding.
- His mother's countless inventions that are big in the future.
