4th best gangster movie ever

1. Godfather 1 and 2 (tie)
3. Goodfellas

Interchangeable with Pulp Fiction at being #4 or 5.

reply

I prefer City of God to Godfather 2 but not by much. I enjoy Goodfellas and the Godfather better.

Pulp Fiction is a crime movie with plenty of gangster scenes and characters, but I'm not sure if it's a gangster movie as a whole.

What about Casino, American Gangster, The Departed, Scarface, Gangs of New York, Donnie Brasco, Carlitos Way, Once upon a time in America, Resevoir dogs, Snatch, Lock Stock, Rocknrolla, Layer cake, Rise of the Footsoldier? I liked City of God but in my opinion these are all above it. Pulp Fiction deffinately classes as a gangster film.

reply

I thought Casino, Gangs of New York, Carlito's Way, Donnie Brasco, The Departed (I personally enjoyed it more than Infernal Affairs which was also top quality), and Reservoir Dogs were all very good but below City of God. Same with the 2 Guy Ritchie movies. Once Upon a Time in America was good but I didn't get into it as much as a lot of other gangster movies. Same with Layer Cake. Never seen Rise of the Footsoldier. Scarface was ridiculous but entertaining.

I would rank City of God and Elite Squad above the Godfather films and Goodfella.

reply

I rate it second only after The Godfather 1.

I loved A Bronx Tale as a kid, possibly more as an adult because I have a son now. When Robert De Niro stood up to Sonny in honor of protecting his son, stand up guy right there. That movie had so much heart.

I always found it funny that the racist italian kids were sitting on the stoops listening to Aaron Neville's Tell It like It is while discussing the mooleys. lol I still chew my wife out after thirteen years if she doesn't unlock my door if I open the car door for her.

R.I.P. Michael Jackson
R.I.P. Heath Ledger

In my opinion, "City of God" is a cross between Goodfellas and Scarface. The similarity to Goodfellas is the narration and introduction of characters. Just like Henry Hill(Ray Liotta)does that in Goodfellas,"Buscape"(Rocket)who was played by actor Alexandre Rodrigues, does the same thing in "City of God." When it comes to the similarity with Scarface, it's Lil' Ze(Leandro Firminho). Just like Tony Montana(Al Pacino)wanted to be the top drug lord in Miami, Lil' Ze basically wants to be the top thug and control the "Cidade de Deus"favela("City of God" slum) in Rio de Janiero. And unlike Tony Montana, Lil' Ze didn't have a bad cocaine addiction. But both Tony and Lil' Ze's lives end in a vicious shootout though. So the way I see it, "City of God" is the Brazilian version of both Goodfellas and Scarface.

Another movie that can be compared to City Of God is New Jack City. Lil' Ze was basically the Brazilian version of Nino Brown who was played by actor Wesley Snipes in NJC.
