Was the killing of that little kid realistic?

In the slum, when Lil Ze's gang forces the kid with the gun to choose one victim?

I've read acrticles and know for a fact that people do get killed, maimed etc. in these places, even today. But still would there be no "code" against it when it comes to children that small?

I've heard of a code against rapists, where in Brazilian prisons, convicted rapists must be isolated because they'll be killed. I have never heard of a code for kids, however I have heard of a lot of kids (15 yr olds, not 5 yr olds) get into crime.
Most ppl in Brazil are still Catholic, so I would imagine that they do have a cultural code so to speak, about not killing children.

I'm not sure how realistic it was, but I think the moment was clearly to show how far Lil Ze was going to control the City of God and how much of a psychopath he was.

That scene was such a standout. It shook me. I don't think I'll ever forget that little kid just crying and crying and crying with such a look of fear on his face. Rough stuff...
