the rating is not fair for this movie

This movie is a beautiful film; it doesn't deserve the ratings they were so unfairly given.. this doesn't deserve a 6.7... it's great.. yes, i know, it's not Kurosawa but I think that kurosawa fans are really "punishing" the film by giving it the lowest rates. We have to forget that this is not Kurosawa, and think of it as another film... I know it would have certainly been better if Kurosawa directed it; but you can't have it all, can you? Anyway, I think the photography and the art design was so damn beautiful that this movie deserves an 8

. . . people have clamored to see it then take the time to rate it.

It certainly has gorgeous cinematography. But, the dang movie went sooooo slow that I missed any real meaning in the storylines. I will confess that I was expecting something more Kurosawa since his name was attached to the movie. Although, I did keep an open mind once I realized it wasn't anything remotely like Seven Samurai or Hidden Fortress, and I was still disappointed.

I will post this same response on the other board making it 5!

Hey! In some circles mediocrity is the apogee of success.

I agree wholeheartedly with you. While recovering from a stomach bug yesterday, I was idly surfing the television channels when I came across this movie. I hadn't seen it before, and I wound up watching it three times. It is a beautiful and haunting movie. I gave it an 8 because it deserved it.

Akira Kurosawa adapted the screenplay before he died! Maybe he would have directed it just a bit differently, however, it was worthy of his name. It is essentially Kurosawa even if he didn't have a hand in the final result.

I don't know. Kurosawa movies are different, this one certainly has it's own personality and some things I lacked in Kurosawa movies - the cinematography is, however, certainly a tribute to him. I can't imagine why Kurosawists would want to punish it.

I agree with Catsoup. It is a pity. As a Kurosawa fan I simply wanted to see a film told masterfully. (And it was, a beautiful and slightly haunting film) I think most people of the Kurosawa ilk, went into the film wanting samurai stand offs and duels. If I'm truthful, the film sags a little due to it's length and this may be a deciding factor for the ratings. (Especially if the viewer isn't looking for a love/period story)

It's a great film and certainly a lovely tribute to Kurosawa. (Especially with people at the mo complaining about Samurai 7. Maybe they should just watch this and restore their faith! lol)

Like many old Japanese movies, this is a movie that needs to be watched slowly in an unhurried spirit of zen. If you can enjoy sitting quietly while sipping a cup of tea slowly, you will love this movie just like I do, but if only like fast pace action movies, go watch G.I Joe or Transformer.

I agree. But Kurosawa fans should understand it's only his story, not him as director.
As for japanese historic movies, this is in my top-3 together with "Twilight Samurai" and "When the Last Sword is Drawn."

It's his adaptation of someone else's book, not his story.
