Does any know why the scenes with the German speaking crew werent given subtitles?

Its very annoying - a good part of the film is in a language I dont know so half of the story must be lost!
EG: The scene where the German Captain is given a note from the radio operator, he starts to shed a tear or two? Does any know what was happening there?

My version had subtitles. Maybe your tv-network was too lazy/incompetent to provide subtitles :).
