This movie entertained me ... but it had so many idiotic moments that it has to be called out. Had they cleaned up many of these issues this film could have been pretty good. Below is my list of idiotics ... feel free to add to it

- nobody said "trash talk" in 1943
- WW2 subs cannot lock onto a target while under water ... especially another sub that is under water
- Torpedoes did not use proximity detonators in WW2 ... they were undependable
- There was no smoking in a WW2 sub ... that would be catastrophic
- Subs cannot transmit Morse Code under water
- German subs were highly unlikely to take on prisoners
- Sub interiors in the film were very unrealistic
- Meningitis in a sub that has no isolation or fresh air ... infection rates would most likely be above 90%
- The deck guns from the destroyer ... firing on a submerged sub ... and taking it out! That was rather fantastic
- Scott ... EPIC MISCAST!!!
- And the chemistry between William Macy and Lauren Holly ... that was believable

I don't disagree there were some issues, but to a few of your points:

There was in fact smoking on WW2 submarines when the sub was on the surface.

The ENTIRE POINT of the film is that German subs were highly unlikely to take on prisoners. This is the plot of this film. So to list this as an "idiotic" moment is idiotic. The Germans even address this. It's the reason for the mutiny.

The American Sub was an authentic WW2 sub interior originally made for the film DOWN PERISCOPE. Das Boot's interior looked different than U-571. If you Google Image "U-Boat" there are enough shots on the interior of a U-Boat where this film looks fairly close to. Exact? No. But not enough to criticize strongly.

I'm fairly certain a large majority of people inside the sub died from Meningitis. They never say an EXACT number, but clearly enough died where the german captain had to have the US soldiers help. Also, they did surface and refresh the air. The surviving soldiers also had gas masks on inside the sub until they could surface.

The sub that is attacked by the Destroyer is at periscope deck, hence right at the surface

Towards the end of the war, the US was promoting younger and younger captains. You might not like Scott Caan, but he was age appropriate.

Lauren Hill is the multi grammy winning Soul Artist and was not in this film.
