What was the point of Dinklage's character?

Why was he even in this movie? His character had no point.
I wonder if the makers of movie figured they needed a "big name" little person.
The whole movie could have gone on without him and his love interest.

"I told you I was freaky. But you didn't believe me."

I just watched the movie for the first time. I think Dinklage's role was to liven up movie. It would have been unbearably serious without him. I wish they had worked him in a bit more and extended his last scene. It was like: fart joke, bad break up, then he disappeared. Of course, the movie seemed to end rather abruptly.
