The best adaptation and the best Captain Hook

I think this is the definitive adaptation of Peter Pan - it follows the book very closely in most respects, only adding embellishments which improve the already existing things. That's the way adaptations should be done I think. You can't do everything just like a book on film, but you can keep the spirit and film can enhance certain elements.

Now Jason Isaacs is undoubtedly the best Captain Hook. I'm fond of Hans Conried in the Disney film too as that is also an accurate portrayal, just more exaggerated due to it being an animation. Isaacs however plays Hook as a real living man, so has more opportunity to give the character depth. Both have the look right - Restoration rake during the reign of Charles II and the requisite attractiveness and charm. Hoffman in Hook is too much of a caricature (if an enjoyable one) but should be considered separately I think.

And as for comparison with more recent live action portrayals, there's no comparison. The one in Pan looks bland. I haven't watched Once Upon a Time, but Colin O'Donoghue looks like he might be ok (I wish he would have long hair rather than short, but I suppose not everyone finds that sexy). But to me it's not really Captain Hook - it's more of an au version. Plus, I think it's quite funny that his Hook has been touted as a 'sexy revamp' of the character, as if that's something new. Hook's always meant to have been alluring - I even find the Disney animation quite debonair. But he was never more so with Isaacs playing him. It's just that pantomimes; musicals and Hook were caricatures, and the 2003 film did not do as well as it should initially. Isaacs however gets everything perfect - a balance of refined politeness that masks brutality; indifference and callousness beneath which lies melancholy; handsomeness; forget-me-not blue eyes and long black hair in varying states of curly wildness just as the character should be. There's no need for anyone else in this role as far as I can see, nor another live action.

I used to watch my DVD copy of this over and over when I was younger. I just saw it again recently on TV and reconnected with my love for it. It's a really well done film I think. And Captain Hook's scenes in this were always a big draw for me as I found him more intriguing than Peter Pan who, accurately portrayed in this film, is really annoying if tragic.

Sorry Hook as you beat in all ways.

I watched this movie recently after many years on tv and I fully agree with you. Jason Isaacs made a superb Hook, there is no doubt about it. As a kid I found his Hook charming and slimy, and now the older me finds him atractive and dangerous, which are both great ways of viewing him.
To your mentioning of Colin O´Donoghue as Hook, I have to say that he really is a 100% AU character, but in the best way. At first I didn´t like it, but the actor has no problem of winning you over.
And, do you really think the boy who plays Peter annoying? I found his portrail fantastic.

I think Jeremy Sumpter's portrayal of Pan is great actually. But Peter Pan is an obnoxious character, so Sumpter is playing it correctly. He is the innocence of youth, with all its good and bad sides. He's playful. imaginative and carefree, but he's also selfish and petulant, so in that regard he is annoying. Perhaps even a bit sinister, though not out of genuine evil but because he's ignorant/thinks everything is a game.

One of my favorite inclusions to Peter's character was his forgetting things. I had read the book a few years prior so seeing how close they were with this movie was really cool. Him forgetting who John was while flying was great and then again when they are in the hideout and he's all 'who?' when Wendy mentions John and Michael. Jeremy played him to perfection.

I think it is the best adaptation. The animated Disney classic, which is very good, and Hook, which is not one of my favorite Spielberg films. But this film is a beautifully made adaptation with a great cast and most of the film contains CGI, but I didn't mind because it was so well done. There are so many stunning scenes and a wonderful score. I only wish I had found this one sooner. This is the kind of film I would have expected Disney to make. 9/10

I agree with every word of this review. This version just has that perfect blend of whimsy and darkness. And I love, love, love Jason Isaacs as Hook-- he was evil but compelling and charismatic.

I'm amazed how this managed to slip by so many (myself included) I first saw it only a couple of years ago just happened to catch it on TV assumed it was some cheap knock off as I'd never heard of this version but it's great, the visuals, the spirit, the casting it really deserves more credit than it received.

It's a shame it was BO flop (has Peter Pan ever done well at the BO? Pan was also a, deserved, flop, and even Hook initially underperformed despite the guranteed Spielberg-Williams-Roberts-Hoffman line-up), because, like you say, it really is very good. I think many people's perception of Peter Pan is largely informed by the 1950s Disney animated film, but overall, this is the best version, and a rare example of a post-2000 family film based on an IP, that is clearly infused with artistic integrity and genuine care, rather than stuffed with pyromtechnics and cultural pandering (and that wasn't a dig at 'woke' so much as a dig at all the nods to pop culture and Americanisms one sees in many movies).

I am watching it now, like many I was unaware of this version as well. I read the Disney version , and saw the classic film. I also saw a little bit of Hook years ago. I never read any of Barrie's books, but hope to someday.

I would give this film a 6. The romance between Pan and Wendy is goofy and sweet. Was Tinker bell that jealous in the book? I also saw Finding Neverland a few years back, it was OK.

Agreed. I'd also give it a 6. My personal favorite is Hook as I don't think anyone does it better than Dustin Hoffman.
