Absolutely the worst film I have ever seen ...

... and I thought Velvet Goldmine and Rumble in Hong Kong would take some beating.

I went in with quite high expectations, as the trailer looked quite good - could this be the Easy Rider for our generation?!? Not a chance! I don't think I could say anything that could 'spoil' anyone's experience of this movie, but here goes.

You first know for sure that things are going really badly when the main guy performs the tramp opera college project. And it get's worse... Awful nonsense spouted by clubbers make you never want to go anywhere near any sort of drug again. Great records are played in terrible scenes - I came very close to biting my own tongue off in a spasming fit of rage when I heard Lamb 'Gorecki' several months later.

I think it's all subversive, right-wing trickery designed to make us all want to be estate agents. If the UK Conservative Government had had this in the '90s, then they wouldn't have needed the Criminal Justice Act to stop us dancing in fields.

LOL. You thought the tralier looked good?? No way. When I saw the trailer I cringed and thought "oh no"...

And then I just saw it on dvd last night. Had to fast forward some bits.. it just doesn't flow with any creative flare in the story or the style of film-making. You know I think it must be very hard to make a film, but why do it when you could end up with a movie like this??? I would rather not try than end up with One Perfect Day... but no, I would because then I would learn from my mistake, and write/make a better film next time.

And using "perfect" in the title, well that can't be good luck....

search IMDB for "Perfect (1985)" ..."Plot Outline: A female aerobics instructor meets a male reporter doing a story on health clubs, but it isn't love at first sight."....

the fate of One Perfect Day will follow this 1985 number.

Your film-going experiences appear to have been fairly limited then! Granted that OPD wasn't the greatest film ever produced in Australia, but it was a long, long way from being a bad one, and received industry award nominations in several catagories, only to lose out to the dark-horse late entry Somersault (as did many other nominated productions) which also had Abbie Cornish in the cast.

I've always felt that the film was too heavily edited and that had it been left longer, giving us a chance to learn more about the originally major characters played by Frank Gallacher and Kerry Armstrong (no bit-players, but leading artists who always turn in strong performances when given a chance) it would've been more satisfying. Perhaps when Paul Currie can find the time he'll favour us with a Directors Cut - which would also give us a chance to enjoy more of David Hobson's FCCA Award-winning score - we can but hope!

I do see exactly where remco is comming from and I do acctually agree with him, this movie really could of been a lot better and really has little to no reflection on the way the scene in melbourne town acctually is, and for a movie that trys to promote the "rave culture" uucchh... It does fail quite poorly and does not just miss hitting the nail on the head but makes us bash our own thumb in doing it.

"Awful nonsense spouted by clubbers make you never want to go anywhere near any sort of drug again"

How awful for you.

lol. Wow..my jaw dropped when I saw this post. Im a movie buff.. I love movies and Iv seen way too many to count. But .. man .. this has gotta be on my top fave list. To be honest, I missed the beginging I started watching when Emma called Tommy, just before she OD'd. Honestly though, from that point on I was hooked. This movie was awesome and I LOVE the soundtrack to it. I guess its all just a matter of taste but seeing a post like this for such a brilliant movie was a bit of a shocker... I mean.. I love this movie..and Im a kiwi!

reply

Yep, i'd have to agree with Aleka... I was pretty surprised to see this post, it was the first link I clicked on when I saw the list, as i wanted to see what motivation someone could have for hating this film.
I guess it's just not hollywood enough.

Yeah the soundtrack was awesome too!

reply

i am with lefty and aleka this film has an amazinf soundtrack and does try to push any kind of anti drug "logo" it just showing u wat can happen i am a raver and this movie nearly perfectly shws a small art of whats its like

reply

What raves have you been going to - ones held in fantasyland? (and what the hell is an anti-drug "logo")

My good this film was bollocks. Just completely implausable from start to finish. I can't believe anyone actually read the script before making this.

I had to take a long bath to wash it's stink off.

reply

the worst piece of *beep* made by people who know nothing about the rave culture or drugs (or filmaking). Totally embarassing!!

reply

Yep.....very, very average.

Saved a little by the performances by Armstrong and Spielman. Was it a look at the rave scene? a murder mystery? a loss of innocence? an exploration of experimental music? a comment on drug use or family disconnection? It seemed to want to cover too many themes and in the end missed most. Much of the acting was shallow, especially Nathan Phillips who seems to only know how to play the clown. Good music though.

Also, it didn't need four endings.

I recently saw this movie and wasn't really impressed. I was disappointed by it's lack of Australian-ism. I thought the storyline was basically an American influence set in Australia, the rave scene not being explored much in our nation's cinematice history. Nothing made this film uniquely Australian, the locations could have been filmed anywhere. It felt like someone was trying to make an American movie with the extra credit of it being Australian. There has been numerous movies made with similar storylines and plots like this all around the world, and the Australian entry isn't anything special.

Not every film made in Australia has to be full of Australian references, you know.

reply

Unfortunately for you, Paul Hogan was unavailable during the filming of this movie. Sorry, no Crocodile Dundee in this one...:(

People without any clue, should really not leave comments on public forums.

it seems that you're list of movies must be extremely minimal to list this as absolutely the worst film you have ever seen!! i take it you are a fan of the mass-produced garbage that hollywood churns out just to keep itself in business!I found it to be a poignant and emotive insight into one man's unique view of the world. The story was compelling, the music was amazing and the cinematography evocative! I'm not a raver, have never been into the scene cos I don't like ecstacy, but this movie gave me a new respect for the culture. "Free your mind, the doors of perception are open for business." It might do you some good.

reply

This really had potential and ended up sucking...

The crazed promoter? the girl dying from e? the professor flying all the way from england to melbourne to try to get the guy to stay in college? give me a break big time...

reply

SHe didn't die from extasy. Maybe you should try watching the movie again, only this time, don't take the pills first.

reply

I had to read this to see what all the fuss was about... And what would posses somebody to name this film "the worst film I have ever seen" I mean sure, your own opinion and such, but that is a pretty big call to make.
I studied this film for year twelve and i think some of you missed the point. One perfect day is basically a cause-and-effect style film. It has very little underlying "deeper meaning". Yes, it reflects the rave scene in Melbourne... quite well in fact, but the music is the main feature. Tommy's journey in "finding himself" and what he wants out of life runs a parallel with the way the music changes throughout the film. The other characters... even Alysse, Hector and Emma are extremely secondary, the focus is all on Tommy and the music he creates, he shows us that it is very possible to break free of the rules and move out on your own.

Also, to whoever said that the film is not anti-drug, you're wrong. One Perfect Day was originally classified R, however the producers appealed to the OFLC, claiming the film was anti-drug. The rating was then brought down to M15+

reply

Terrible, sentimental, high school standard dialogue.

Overblown theatrics passing off as acting.

Ridiculous, fear mongering anti-drug message.

Avoid this film unless you wanna see how bad cynical film making can be.

However, the soundtrack has its moments... overblown as it may be at more than a few points.

reply

did you have your eyes closed during this film?
it was one of the most visually stimulating and emotionally capturing film i have seen produced in Australia
sure it had some corny bits but honestly the cinematography was outstanding the the emotions provoked during the viewing were absolutely awesome
from the moment i turned it on i was hooked
you just need to open your mind out a bit
this is what Australian film is all about

reply

If this is what Australian film is all about then R.I.P.

If your 'open mind' rates this after school special melodrama as an example of Australian film maybe you should open your eyes to Chopper, The Propostion, Noise, The Tracker, Dogs in Space etc etc.

Broaden your horizons buddy and don't be such a condesending prick... cheers mate!
