wow.

i'm almost shocked at how terrible this movie was. the only thing that kept me watching was the boy's accent. besides that, nothing really happened. it almost seemed pointless. i wanted to like it. but my good senses tell me no.

xmisha.
it'll be easier next time.

Firstly, this movie was hardly a smash hit so let's not overstate how many people actually liked it (besides the few that do are the ones who are more likely to come here and let us know) - but having just read a thread or two, I think many (not all) of those who like it are latino of some sort or grew up in "that sort of environment" (as if this is reason enough to like a flick). A (real) Peruvian and a Domonican would not consider themselves to have a really great bond. But move to America and have kids, and these American kids see themselves as 'ethnic latino', and almost 'against' the white majority, and suddenly American kids with Peurto Rican or Domincan parents are nearly the same as far as they're concerned - hence anyone who has 'latino' parentage feels it their duty to like this movie as it gives them a sense of wallowing in their (ethnic based) self-identity for a couple of hours - which is, after all, one of the favourite things to do for some people.

Truth hurts. I still haven't read one good reasoned post on why this is good (including this one, which accuses racism and avoids the topics), other than the 'you don't understand because you're not latino' nonsense. All this does is betray the agenda of those who like it.

So basically you're agreeing with me (that people only like it if they're "latino" and hence feel a sense of ethnic duty to like it), but saying that in American latinos' youthful pride that this is ok after all. Fair enough if it's your take. But I'm not sure how it makes me racist other than I think it isn't reason enough to like a movie. Which frankly it isn't. A good movie, to those with thoughtful minds, needs to transcend something so simple and petty as this in order to be memorable and worthwhile. I liked Goodbye Lenin even though I'm not from Germany circa 1989 because it speaks to me on a common human level. I liked Gladiator even though I wasn't a Roman in a past life because of the familial and power elements, and the interest it sparks in wondering about a long-gone civilisation that so much of ours is ultimately based on. I liked Coeurs despite not being French because of it's universal relationship element, The Green Butchers despite not being Danish because it had me cacking on my couch like I hadn't for quite a while, and Revolutionary Road despite not being American. I didn't, however, like Three Suns, not because I'm not Swedish or from the middle ages, but because it's pointless and has no message (despite arrogantly thinking it does). I didn't like Armageddon because it's rubbish. And I didn't like Victor Vargas, not because I'm not American latino, but because it's pointless and has no underlying memorable message or interest. To suggest I don't understand Victor wanting to get with a good looking girl to help his reputation after being seen with a fat one is to ignore the fact that I fully understand it's the most done-to-death, shallow, and derogitory movie I've seen in a long while. That anyone could think this film's message could be lost on someone and that that is the only reason they don't like it is kind of cute in one way, and kind of ridiculing in another way. You are alright and more intelligent than others on this movie's page TL, don't get me wrong, but there's a whole world of wonderful movies out there that a you discover them, will leave most of the movies liked in your younger days well behind. I know this from experience.
