The actor that played Lester was absolutely dreadful............. .......

He ruined what could've been a flawless film. There was something about the way he spoke and his mannerisms. ANNOYING

He was certainly no Laurence Olivier in his delivery but I thought he played the role of a dumb infatuated average cop who abused his position for a woman fairly adequately.

yeah. he was supposed to be dumb.

Just put it on the Underhill's tab.

I've never liked Ron Eldard as an actor, and in rewatching this film tonight, I was reminded of how mannered and stiff his performance was. I had some problems with the overall direction that overlap with my complaints about his performance, but yeah, I really think he was out of place. Especially with Connelly, Kingsley and Aghdashloo giving such stellar performances.

FWIW, in reading the book recently I pictured Hugh Jackman in the role. A tired, worn Hugh Jackman maybe, but still......

I thought Eldard did an okay job playing such an unlikable character, but I have always hated his raspy voice. I think you are right, though, The Angel Stayed. Put up against the other actors in this film, he seems a little weak, as did the young actor who played Behrani's son.

reply

I definitely like your idea about Hugh Jackman, he would have been the a really good choice.

But yea, I was neutral about Ron Eldard.

“My God! It’s full of stars!”

reply

His name is Ron Eldard and he usually portrays bad people in the movies he does! For example, have you seen the film "Super 8"? The character he plays in that movie is a despicable one!

reply

You think Super 8 was despicable, try watching Bastard out of Carolina if you really want to hate an actor in a role and that colors your vision of him in any other role he takes. Don't say you weren't warned.

reply

I have seen that movie & I agree with you! He was an awful person in that one!

reply

I feel like it's meant to be a portrait of a character who is, himself, a lousy actor. Especially in the scene where Lester goes to the house and tries to intimidate the Colonel with his badge and uniform: Lester puts on a hysterical facade as a superhero cop who's come to save the day, and the Colonel sees right through it.

reply

agre have no clue how he was cast or is working as an actor.

reply

I think I know what you mean, sorta brought the film down to a Lifetime movie.
